About

Analytics Data Engineer working daily in SQL Server and the Microsoft BI stack. Write and tune advanced T-SQL - stored procedures, functions, views and complex queries - against a production trading and finance platform, and build and maintain SSIS integrations and SQL Server Agent scheduled loads. Design and extend warehouse structures on dimensional principles with star and snowflake schemas, conformed dimensions and partitioned facts.

Develop and repair SSRS/RDL reports and led their migration into Power BI, validating every output against the original before cutover.

Build

Power BI semantic models and DAX over the same Tabular engine SSAS uses, and report from existing SSAS cubes. Strong on the operational side - monitoring scheduled loads, investigating failures to root cause, and implementing validation, reconciliation, audit and exception-handling controls before anything reaches a stakeholder.

Experience

Data Analyst / BI Developer at Seaboard & Trading (ST) (2025-04 – Present)

Commodity trading, shipping & supply chain

  • Design, develop and maintain ETL processes and data pipelines in SQL Server, T-SQL and SSIS, moving data from multiple operational source systems into the warehouse with idempotent loads so reruns never duplicate.
  • Develop and optimise stored procedures, functions, views and complex T-SQL against a trading and finance platform - MTM valuations, cashflow and invoice reporting, inventory aging and FX rate logic.
  • Build and extend warehouse structures and dimensional models - star and snowflake schemas with conformed dimensions and partitioned facts, tuned for query performance over large datasets.
  • Develop, repair and maintain SSRS/RDL reports, and led the migration of legacy parameterised SSRS reporting into Power BI - rebuilding each report, validating output line by line against the original, and extending it with analysis the previous platform could not deliver.
  • Build and optimise Power BI semantic models and dashboards with DAX and Row-Level Security for finance, trading, risk and executive users, and report from existing SSAS cubes where the analytical model already exists.
  • Monitor scheduled data loads on SQL Server Agent and Azure Data Factory, investigate failures to root cause and resolve production data issues - join-level fan-out, invoice sign conventions on reversals and duplicate rows producing wrong figures in production.
  • Improve query, ETL and reporting performance - reviewing execution plans, tuning indexes, reshaping models and DAX, and reworking a stored procedure that had become a production bottleneck.
  • Implement data validation, reconciliation, audit and exception-handling controls - reconciling against finance-approved figures before release, and finding aggregation logic in a semantic model that had been masking over-hedged positions.
  • Translate business requirements from finance, risk, commercial and operations into maintainable data and BI solutions, and conduct unit, integration and regression testing before each release.
  • Document data flows, dimensional models, technical solutions, source-to-target mappings and support procedures, and work a governed delivery flow in Git/GitHub with peer-reviewed pull requests and promotion across development, test and production.
  • Apply data governance and security practice - RBAC, Row-Level Security and POPIA-aligned handling of personal data, with documented lineage and change records.

GIS Developer at Oynetec (2024-07 – 2024-12)

  • Designed spatial databases in PostgreSQL/PostGIS, validated source data, and published visual outputs for end users.

Education

National Diploma in Geomatics – Cape Peninsula University of Technology (2024)
