Kalliopy Marangellis

As the second oldest of 4 siblings I worked part time throughout school and University. I was awarded a University bursary yearly due to circumstances and my academic achievements. I completed my MBCHB degree at the University of the Free State in 2023 and had an internship tenure at the Tembisa Provincial Tertiary Hospital Complex between 2024 and 2025 where I was exposed to all major medical disciplines.

During this period I rotated through the Emergency Medicine and Family Medicine departments where I completed all the life support courses listed above. This experience allowed me to gain confidence and appreciation working in both a government health system and a tertiary care facility. Currently completing community service at Tembisa Hospital, with the first six months undertaken in the Emergency Department and the subsequent six months in the Ophthalmology Department.

This rotation structure was intentionally pursued to broaden acute clinical exposure while gaining focused experience and developing expertise in ophthalmology, with the goal of pursuing a long-term career in the field. Currently preparing to write the Ophthalmology Primary examinations in June. My aim is to provide Ophthalmological care to the best of my ability to serve the public health sector in the Province of Gauteng as well as to participate in beneficial research, both of which will re-enforce my passion in Ophthalmology and choice of career path.
