It is with great pleasure that I apply for the Candidate Attorney Programme 2024.
My name is Kgosi Thage. I hold a Bachelor of Arts (International Relations and Political Sciences) and a Bachelor of Laws graduate from the University of Witwatersrand. I have developed into a diligent, respectful, disciplined, resilient, and tenacious individual. I am reliable, punctual, and adaptive. I am compassionate and empathetic. I always try to have a positive impact on the world and the people around me. I am a man of integrity. I can speak English, Sesotho, and isiZulu.
A career in law would enable me to make a positive impact on the lives of people while adding great value. In addition, would allow me to significantly better the financial situation at home. Most importantly, becoming a qualified, skilled, and experienced lawyer would be personally fulfilling and rewarding.
Over the years, I have developed the skills to research and critically analyze. These skills have enabled me to grasp my social surroundings and sparked an interest in the law. I have gained legal skills such as conducting legal research, identifying and solving legal issues by applying the relevant legal rules, as well as consulting skills.
I have also learned how to draft legal documents. In addition, I am set apart by my ability to conduct research, collect data and produce results effectively and on time. I can also work efficiently under pressure.
I am a good team player and I am capable of being a leader. I am good at communicating, both in writing and verbally. While holding leadership positions, I have acquired management skills, time-management skills, and the ability to work well with others.
In 2017, I was the Vice Chairperson of the Wits Music Society, which allowed me to develop management skills, good communication skills, time-management skills, and the ability to work well with people. In 2018, I became the Treasurer of the Wits Music Society, which improved the skills, I acquired in the previous year. In addition, in the third year of studying for my LLB degree (2020), I achieved the Dean's List award.
I am currently a legal intern at the Centre of Applied Legal Studies (CALS) until the end of December 2022. During my internship, I drafted a legal memorandum on the legislative framework of traditional leaders in South Africa and helped facilitate a capacity-building workshop in Kgomo Kgomo Village, Hammanskraal, North West with the traditional council in that area. In addition, I also helped facilitate a capacity-building workshop with the members of the Praise and Salvation Foundation on reporting sexual offenses to the police, gender-based violence, and, obstetric violence.
Obstetric violence is the disrespectful, aggressive, and humiliating treatment of women and girls during labour and birth. I presented information on the process of laying a criminal charge, and a summary of how to access information or lay a complaint at each stage of this process. In a country with a significantly high and alarming number of gender-based violence and femicide cases, it is crucial to spread such knowledge to those who may not have easy access to it.
It was personally rewarding and fulfilling to be a part of a such project that has a positive impact on the lives of those who attended the workshop. Especially, considering that they will most likely impart this knowledge to the next person.
Furthermore, I have drafted letters to clients, briefs for counsel, and agendas and itineraries for workshops. I have filed and served court documents. Additionally, I have written a report after going on a site inspection along with Members of Parliament who sit on the Select Committee on Petitions in the Sekhukhune District of Limpopo following a petition by representatives from five villages in the area, which have not had proper access to water since 2009.
This was after securing a number of court orders against the Municipality.
I am looking forward to acquiring more skills that will ensure that I make an invaluable addition to your team. I believe that all the skills I possess make me a very competent potential employee.
