About
Senior executive, arts leader and cultural policy scholar with 15+ years' experience across financial management, governance, risk, non-profit leadership and the creative industries.
Former Chief Executive
Officer of Vuyani Dance Theatre, where I led organisational transformation, developed a sustainable hybrid operating model and strengthened the financial and institutional resilience of an internationally recognised African contemporary dance company. My career combines finance and governance expertise with extensive arts management, production, touring and stakeholder leadership. I have worked across non-profit, philanthropic, cultural and corporate environments, managing financial strategy, governance, risk, fundraising, organisational development and strategic partnerships.
I am a Master of Arts in Cultural Policy & Management graduate whose research examines the economic sustainability and precarity of performing artists. My professional and academic work is increasingly focused on the intersection of financial sustainability, artist livelihoods, cultural policy and the African creative economy, with a particular interest in developing practical financial solutions for creative practitioners.
Professional focus: Building financially sustainable creative organisations and developing systems that enable artists to build sustainable lives.
Experience
Chief Executive Officer at VUYANI DANCE THEATRE (2016 – 2025)
Led a significant period of institutional transformation, strengthening Vuyani's financial, operational and organisational foundations while protecting its artistic vision and social purpose. Developed a hybrid organisational model combining the NPO mandate with earned income, strategic partnerships and international touring, creating greater financial resilience and organisational capacity. A defining aspect of my leadership was using financial strategy to protect people and artistic practice.
Strengthened financial planning, income diversification, governance, fundraising and risk management, enabling the organisation to retain employees on full salaries during the COVID-19 pandemic. Led executive strategy, governance, financial sustainability, fundraising, stakeholder relationships, partnerships, human resources, risk, artist support, production and tour management. Provided the organisational infrastructure supporting international productions and touring, including financial, contractual, logistical and stakeholder requirements.
During my tenure, Vuyani's work reached major international platforms across Europe, the UK and United States, including presentations of Cion: Requiem of Ravel's Boléro at major international venues and festivals. The role ultimately demonstrated that an African performing arts organisation can be artistically ambitious, internationally relevant, socially purposeful and financially sustainable. The experience became the foundation for my subsequent academic research into artist precarity and the economic sustainability of the performing arts.
Chief Operating Officer at VUYANI DANCE THEATRE (2016-01 – 2016-03)
Served as COO during the transition from founder-led to new executive leadership. Worked with the Founder and CEO to implement organisational changes, strengthen operational structures, clarify responsibilities and establish the systems required for continuity and effective executive handover.
Financial Consultant at VUYANI DANCE THEATRE (2014 – 2016)
Provided financial and organisational consulting support during a foundational period of Vuyani's development. Formulated and implemented financial policies and procedures, managed financial activities, developed organisational budgets and established quarterly financial reporting to the Board. Supported the registration of Vuyani Dance Company as a for-profit entity and Vuyani Dance Trust as a PBO, creating structures through which the organisation could pursue diversified revenue and social-impact funding.
Recruited and supported the development of appropriate financial administration capacity.
Non-Executive Director | Chairperson, Audit & Compliance Committee at BUSINESS AND ARTS SOUTH AFRICA (BASA) (2022 – Present)
Provide strategic and financial expertise to the governance and development of South Africa's creative sector. Contribute to board governance, strategic oversight, audit and risk, financial sustainability, arts-business relationships and sector development. As Chairperson of the Audit & Compliance Committee, provide oversight of financial governance, risk management, internal controls and compliance, supporting the Board in fulfilling its fiduciary and governance responsibilities.
Inaugural Chairperson at THEATRE & DANCE ALLIANCE (TADA) (2021 – 2022)
Served as inaugural Chairperson of TADA, established during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic when theatres were closed or operating at restricted capacity and international touring was severely disrupted. Led the establishment of a collective sector voice advocating for theatre and dance practitioners, organisations and creative workers, engaging with government and stakeholders around reopening, policy, funding, artist livelihoods and long-term sustainability. The role strengthened my understanding of the relationship between cultural policy, financial sustainability and the lived realities of creative workers.

Coordinated with the Complex Cash-Up Office on the reconciliation and handover of financial information, while preparing reports and operational requirements for the incoming day team.
