I am currently employed as a project manager by SANRAL since March 2018, however, since March 2020 I have been working as an embedded systems engineer under a secondment contract with Quantum Design and Engineering (QDE). In my time at QDE I have successfully designed and developed an access control gateway system that used industrial protocols, serial communications, and a microcontroller. I developed the software using embedded C++ and Atmel studio, designed the circuit and PCB, and manufactured a prototype PCB and soldered components on it.
Finally, I had to integrate the gateway system to an Adroit SCADA system. I routinely used tools such as oscilloscopes, function generators, logic analyzers, and digital multi-meters.
I have spent some time training and learning PLC programming, SCADA configuration, server configuration for different SCADA systems, TCP/IP Ethernet communication, and SQL database management. I have experience in hardware and software debugging, reading code to find and fix issues or bugs. I have functional knowledge of all electrical legislation, codes, and standards of practice, and have gained expertise in the use of industry-specific tools and applications.
