About

Mcaylin is an Honours Degree (Biology) graduate, with a double major in Forensic Genetics and Cellular Cytology. He is an academic, conscientious and hardworking. He is a dedicated genetic and biological researcher with five years of experience in using various molecular biology and forensic techniques including DNA profiling, sequencing and DNA marker systems.

Mcaylin is passionate about biology and forensics and is now eager and excited to embark on a fully fledged career aligned to his qualifications. It was most notably during his studies and in his years of practical experience with various genetic and biological techniques that his passion for academia and biological research became apparent to both his peers and himself. He finds the field fascinating and a sure and certain way of making a difference in the lives of people, in our country and in the world.

It is his aim to be a part of a successful organisation that is directly involved in making a meaningful contribution to the field of Biology.

University of KZN Lab Analyst Feb. 2022 – Nov. 2022

Supervisor shadowing using multiple cellular and genetic analyses
Perform laboratory activities related to the project.
Assist senior researcher with experiments, quality control and data verification.
Undertake cell sample processing when necessary.
Perform molecular biology experiments including RNA/DNA extraction, PCR, and sequencing.
Perform sequencing and bioinformatic analysis
Preparation of reagents.
Perform general laboratory housekeeping / equipment maintenance.
Participation in the institution’s academic activities including journal club, lab meetings, research update meetings

University of KZN Student Genetic and Biological Researcher 2018 – 2021

Cytogenetic studies: comprehensive assays in all types of chromosome studies, including congenital disorders, prenatal diagnosis and hematologic or oncologic disorders.
These studies include traditional cytogenetics techniques as well as molecular cytogenetics by

FISH and microarray.

Molecular genetic studies: expertise in DNA and molecular genetic testing for both congenital disorders and hematology/oncology. Utilization of FISH, MLPA, DHPLC, chromosomal microarray.
Molecular biology background, I have experience in preparing and utilizing Electrophoresis gel, DNA sequencing, Northern and Southern blot analyses, macromolecule blotting and probing, DNA and Protein arrays and the numerous PCR analyses.
