I am an agricultural graduate at University of the Free State specializing in Animal science. Simbra Course Participant at University of The Free State Experimental Farm (2025 – 2025)
We participated in a farm visit under the supervision of Prof. Errol, where we observed and evaluated bulls and cows based on desirable production and breeding traits. We assessed animals according to their phenotypes (visible physical characteristics such as body structure, size, muscling, and overall condition).
We rated livestock based on performance-related traits including conformation, fertility indicators, growth potential, and structural soundness. We recorded animal identity numbers accurately to ensure proper data collection, traceability, and effective herd management. lastly, we gained practical knowledge in livestock selection, breeding evaluation, and herd improvement strategies.
Dohne Merino Course Participant at Dohne Merino Farm at Free state (2025 – 2025)
we participated in an educational farm visit under the supervision of Prof. Errol at a Dohne Merino sheep farm. Evaluated and ranked animals using the A, A, B, and C grading system based on breed standards and production traits.
We assessed rams critically, understanding their high genetic impact, as one ram can mate with approximately 25-30 ewes per breeding season. We applied stricter selection criteria to rams due to their significant influence on flock genetics and overall herd improvement. We evaluated ewes and lambs based on reproductive potential, structural soundness, growth performance, and overall conformation.
Lastly, we gained practical knowledge in sheep selection, genetic improvement, and sustainable flock management practices.
