My name is Olwethu Khanyile a 21-year-old young black female doing my third and final year studying BCom Economics and Econometrics at the University of Johannesburg. I hope to do my honors and masters after completing my degree. Education is crucial to me and getting the best education I believe will set a bright future for myself and my family.
What I do in my free time or after school activity is Sport. I currently play for the University of Johannesburg Basketball first team. Playing sport is my coping mechanism as schoolwork can get heavy especially in your final year. Not only do I play basketball but I’m also an assistant coach for netball at my student accommodation where I assist with the administrative work of the team and the actual coaching.
I’m also part of an NGO called Sacred Spaces which is a girl talk initiative aimed at growing, building, inspiring, educating, empowering, motivating, and healing young girls and young women. This NGO was established in March 2021 by a young woman Nqobile Mpamile who lives in Soweto, Pimville and aims to assist young girls in Soweto through life mentorship. It is still a developing NGO but there is a promising future for this organization.
We kick started with donating clothes to the community of Soweto in Kliptown and then hosted a games day for the children if the community and provided food and refreshments. Our next project is a pad drive where we go around schools handing out sanitary products to young girls in need.
This is just a little bit of information about myself and what interests me.
