About

Engineer with a multidisciplinary engineering background and a strong interest in optimisation, data-driven analysis, modelling and continuous improvement. Currently completing a PhD focused on machine learning-based optimisation and decision-making in a smart mining environment, with experience in applied industrial engineering research and quantitative problem-solving. My academic and project experience has involved practical problems across mining, manufacturing, supply chain, logistics, resource allocation and operational efficiency.

This has developed a structured approach to problem formulation, data analysis, optimisation and evaluating opportunities for process improvement. I am particularly interested in applying these capabilities in an industry and consulting environment, where analytical modelling and engineering principles can be used to improve processes, support decision-making and develop practical solutions to complex operational problems.

Experience

Junior lecturer - North-West University – School of Industrial Engineering (2023 - 2025) Key responsibilities and experience:

  • Apply optimisation and numerical methods to engineering problems, including mathematical formulation and analytical problem-solving.
  • Develop and communicate structured approaches to complex engineering and operational problems.
  • Guide students through real-world industrial engineering projects involving optimisation, process improvement, resource allocation, logistics, and operational efficiency.
  • Translate complex technical concepts into practical and accessible solutions for different audiences.
  • Support project development through problem definition, literature, and industry analysis, methodological selection, data interpretation, and evaluation of proposed solutions.
  • Represent the School of Industrial Engineering at external engagement and marketing events, communicating technical concepts and organisational capabilities to prospective students, parents, and stakeholders.

PhD Research: A process model for the design of a machine learning-based optimisation model in a smart mining environment - Applied Research & Engineering Projects (2024) - Investigating how organisations can integrate machine learning, optimisation, digital technologies, and organisational decision making to improve complex operational decisions.

  • Analysing organisational, technical, and analytical requirements influencing the successful adoption of machine learning-based optimisation.
  • Developing a structured process model to guide the progression from organisational decision needs through problem formulation, data preparation, analytical modelling, implementation, and continuous learning.
  • Applying systems thinking to understand the interactions between organisational processes, data, technology, analytical models, and governance.
  • Engaging with industry practitioners to investigate the practical organisational realities, barriers, and enabling factors affecting data-driven optimisation.
  • Translating empirical findings and analytical concepts into practical design considerations for organisations implementing machine learning-based decision optimisation. Master’s Research: Biomechanical quantification and analysis of the human foot and ankle joint complex - Applied Research & Engineering Projects (2022 - 2023) - Designed and executed an experimental engineering study involving multiple measurement technologies and data sources.
  • Integrated sensor, motion-capture and force-plate data to investigate human movement.
  • Conducted quantitative data analysis using MATLAB.
  • Evaluated and validated measurement approaches through comparison of multiple data sources.
  • Identified opportunities for system optimisation, including code refinement and modular sensor-platform design.
  • Managed the research process from problem definition and experimental design through data collection, analysis, and interpretation.
