I am a scientist interested in advancing my molecular biology related studies. I am particularly interested in research i.e. the use of molecular biology laboratory techniques and scientific theories in the agricultural sector.
Skills description During my time in academia, I have obtained expertise in molecular biology techniques, such as RNA and genomic DNA extractions, PCR, semi-quantitative PCR (sq-PCR), Real-Time quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) and cloning. In addition, I have a firm theoretical grasp of academically related statistical methods and practical experience with software such as Graph Pad Prism and Oligo Explorer. Practical application of skills I applied these skills during my BSc Honours degree, where I focused on a co-chaperone “Heat shock protein40” in relation to proteolysis and cancer prevention in humans. Currently, while pursuing my Master’s project, I am characterizing the Heat-shock transcription factor gene in the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana, by analysing the gene expression and accumulation of raffinose oligosaccharides. Furthermore, I have obtained a certificate for attending a five-day workshop at the Central Analytical Facility (CAF) at Stellenbosch University, for constructing a mini library of Aspalathus sp. (rooibos tea), through NEXTGEN Sequencing. I have also been a demonstrator/tutor for 3 rd year students registered for Genetics 344. Recently, I also worked as a trainee medical scientist in the PCR molecular biology lab at Pathcare. Here, I refined my existing skills and gained new laboratory skills which include the extraction of nucleic acids, RT-qPCR, the operating of advanced lab equipment, using Medi-Tech, result interpretation, problem solving and selfdevelopment in a fast paced and highly productive working environment.
