Alvina Lal

With over six years of experience in government policy, I’m passionate about driving evidence-based reforms that improve systems and outcomes for communities. I specialize in regulatory compliance, risk analysis, and stakeholder engagement, with proven expertise in areas such as anti-money laundering and sexual violence law reform. My strength lies in analyzing complex issues, developing practical solutions, and communicating them clearly to decision-makers.

I worked at the New Zealand Ministry of Justice from 2019 to 2025, progressing through roles from National Coordinator, Court Registrar and Publishing Advisor to Policy Advisor. Over this time, I gained experience across sensitive coronial matters, court operations, legal publishing, and strategic policy reforms and development. I led major reforms in anti-money laundering (AML/CFT) and sexual violence legislation, providing strategic advice to Ministers, coordinating stakeholder engagement, and translating complex legal and regulatory issues into clear, actionable recommendations.

My expertise spans policy analysis, risk assessment, and managing projects that improve systems and outcomes for communities.

I have a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Auckland, majoring in Political Science, International Relations and English Literature.

During my time at Justice, I wanted to up skill myself so completed a paper towards a Postgraduate Certificate in Public Policy.
