Mental Health Counsellor

Hello, my name is Gina Hopkins, I am a dedicated counsellor in the final stages of my master’s degree with my RCC registration date projected for January, 2025. It is with great pleasure that I submit this formal letter of interest in joining your organization. I have always had a passion for assisting different demographics with a range of life challenges as I recognize difficulties in life are dynamic and I believe healing is possible for everyone.
I have over one year on clinical counselling experience and have recently completed my practicum and internship which involved direct supervision while providing counselling to a caseload of up to 15 clients with wide range of mental and physical health challenges. I have worked with children, adolescents, and adults which includes clients from the 2SLGBTQI+ community, different minorities, religious, and cultural backgrounds. I use an integrative approach to therapy which includes ACT and SFBT among other modalities while collaborating with clients to find a plan tailored to their specific needs.
As well, I have two years working at the Vancouver Crisis and Suicide Prevention Centre. My time at the centre provided me the opportunity to develop therapeutic skills in supporting those in acute mental health crisis which included risk assessment, resourcing, and safety planning. I believe my strengths include having a calming presence, a deeply empathetic disposition, and the ability to maintain composure when discussing trauma.
The feedback I have received from callers has helped me realize the positive impact my support has had on them during their immediate time of crisis; being able to provide this support showed me that connection provides a great deal of hope for healing.
Through my extensive experience teaching Red Cross swim programs for over 12 years, I have had the pleasure of supporting individuals not only physically but also mentally with achieving their swimming goals. This position was a driving force for me in returning to post-secondary education to pursue a counselling career since a great deal of the work was supporting clients through their fears surrounding traumatic experiences with water or a general fear of water. This included collaborating with the client and setting goals, communicating tasks to help them reach their goals, meeting the client where they are while gently encouraging them through difficult challenges in a non-judgmental manner, and educating them on safe water practices.
I have found my experience supporting individuals in this manner has been extremely rewarding.
I am dedicated to providing person-centered, evidence and strength-based approaches to healing. I believe individuals know themselves best and with the proper support and guidance can find the answers within themselves to lead them toward healing. I believe that I have the personal and professional qualities to successfully contribute to the therapeutic services provided by this organization.
I would be excited to have the opportunity to join your team. I greatly appreciate your time and consideration.
