When moving to a new home, one of the biggest decisions you’ll make is which removal company to hire. A good removal company can make your move seamless and stress-free, while the wrong one can cause frustration, delays, and unexpected expenses. To help you find the best fit, we’ve compiled the ten most important questions to ask a removal company before hiring them.

1. What is the Total Cost of the Move?

Before you hire any removal company, the first question you’ll likely want to ask is about the total cost. Ensure the company provides a detailed breakdown of all expenses. Ask if their quote covers labor, fuel, packing materials, and any other potential costs. Make sure there are no hidden fees or surprise charges that could pop up later. Always request a detailed written quote to avoid any misunderstandings.

Tip: Get quotes from multiple companies to compare prices, but remember the cheapest option isn’t always the best.

2. Are You Licensed and Insured?

It’s essential to work with a licensed and insured removal company. A licensed company follows specific regulations that ensure a professional standard. Insurance is equally important, as it protects your belongings in case of damage or loss during the move. Ask for proof of insurance and clarify what it covers—whether it’s liability insurance, goods in transit insurance, or both.

Tip: Always verify the insurance details and check the validity of their license.

3. Do You Offer Packing Services?

If you don’t have time to pack yourself or if you prefer professional packing to safeguard your belongings, ask the removal company if they offer packing services. Some companies provide full packing services, while others may offer partial services or supply the packing materials if you prefer to pack yourself. Also, inquire about any additional costs for these services and the quality of the packing materials they use.

Tip: If you have fragile items, check if they offer special packing for delicate items such as glassware or antiques.

4. How Do You Handle Valuables and Fragile Items?

Not all items are created equal when it comes to moving. If you own valuable or fragile items—like electronics, antiques, or artwork—ensure that the removal company can handle these properly. Ask if they have special procedures for packing and transporting delicate or high-value items. Some companies may charge extra for these services, so be sure to ask about any additional fees.

Tip: Make a list of your fragile or valuable items and ask the company how they will handle each specific item.

5. What Are Your Policies for Delays or Cancellations?

Unexpected events like bad weather or unforeseen circumstances can delay your move. It's crucial to understand the company's policies regarding delays. Will they charge extra for waiting times? Additionally, find out their cancellation policy in case your plans change. Some companies may require a deposit that could be non-refundable if you cancel at the last minute.

Tip: Always ask for flexibility in rescheduling, especially if your moving plans are subject to change.

6. Can You Provide References or Reviews?

A reputable removal company should have no problem providing references from previous customers. You can also check online reviews on platforms like Google, Trustpilot, or social media. Asking for references allows you to speak directly with past clients and hear about their experiences firsthand.

Tip: Avoid companies that are reluctant to provide references or that have consistently poor online reviews.

7. What is Your Experience with Similar Moves?

Every move is unique, so it’s essential to ask the company about their experience with moves similar to yours. Have they moved large households, apartments, or businesses? Have they dealt with complex logistics like narrow staircases, long-distance moves, or limited parking? Experience matters, and a company familiar with your type of move will be better equipped to handle challenges.

Tip: Don’t be afraid to ask how they would specifically handle any tricky aspects of your move, like awkward spaces or delicate furniture.

8. How Will You Protect My Property During the Move?

Moves can be hard on both your belongings and your property. Ask how the removal company plans to protect your home during the process. Will they use floor and wall protectors, door shields, and padded covers for your furniture? Make sure they have proper procedures in place to prevent damage to both your items and your home during the move.

Tip: Request information about their disassembly and reassembly procedures for large furniture.

9. Do You Offer Storage Solutions?

Sometimes, you may need storage options between moving out and moving into your new place. Ask the company if they provide storage services, whether short-term or long-term. Ensure that their storage facilities are secure, well-maintained, and climate-controlled if necessary. Don’t forget to ask about the cost of storage and if it is included in the moving package or billed separately.

Tip: Check whether their storage facility is easily accessible in case you need to retrieve items.

10. What Is Your Schedule Availability?

Finally, make sure the company can accommodate your desired moving date. Ask about their availability and whether they can offer flexibility if your schedule changes. Some companies may be booked up far in advance, so it’s a good idea to plan and secure your date early. Also, clarify how long they expect the move to take and whether they have any backup plans in case something runs late.

Tip: If you’re moving during a busy season, such as summer, try to book your removal company as early as possible.
