I am a 19 year old mental health nursing student at Northumbria university. I have recently received the grade of an A* from college for health and social care. I have published a book and appeared in documentaries which promote and spread awareness regarding mental health.
As a support worker who supports individuals with learning disabilities, mental health disorders, and drug and alcohol misuse, my responsibilities include:
. Assisting with daily living activities - Supporting individuals with tasks such as personal hygiene, meal preparation, medication management, household chores.
. Providing emotional support - Offering empathy, understanding, and a non-judgmental approach as well as discussing my own personal experiences to individuals who may be experiencing emotional challenges or distress.
. Promoting independence - Encouraging individuals to develop and maintain their independence by teaching life skills, problem-solving techniques, supporting their decision-making processes and helping them access the community.
. Managing behaviours that challenge - by using the least restrictive practice as possible we empower the individual which helps to promote their wellbeing. Developing strategies to manage and de-escalate challenging behaviours , while maintaining a safe and supportive environment for everyone involved
. Documentation and reporting - maintaining accurate records of interactions, progress, and any incidents, and reporting to appropriate authorities or service managers as required.
. Working in partnership with multi disciplinary teams and external agencies - working alongside other professionals to provide best practice by holistic care and support.
. Continuing professional development - Keeping up-to-date with relevant training, policies, legislation and best practices to enhance my knowledge and skills in supporting individuals with diverse needs.
