I am a pharmacy student in my 4th year. I have experience with patients in pharmacies and hospitals owing to my placement programme, where I have acquired a myriad of health professional practice skills from consulting patients in community pharmacies and hospitals, both on a personal and professional level.

Year 1 and 2 LtP Community Pharmacy Placement - Community Pharmacy

(2021-11)

• Correctly picked, labelled and dispensed medicines from the dispensary in a community pharmacy.
• Demonstrated effective verbal communication skills, speaking to patients and customers in over-the-counter consultations.
• Used WWHAM consultation method to successfully diagnose a child with a cold and recommend them Calpol suspension.
• Displayed professionalism in the pharmacy at all times, greeting patients, listening to them patiently and attentively, and saying goodbye.
• Correctly used a near-miss log to record and reflect on dispensing errors.

Year 3 Hospital Placement - Hospital

(2023-11)

• Learned about the key aspects of hospital practice, such as ward rounds, observations, care plans and consultations.
• Was given permission to practice consultations, speaking to patients in the hospital wards.
• Spoke to many patients from different backgrounds and age groups with various health incidents explaining why they were admitted into hospital.
• On several occasions, appropriately took patient medical histories, asking which medicines they were taking and why to review whether they were needed or if their doses needed changing.
• In ward rooms, successfully performed patient observations on elderly patients, measuring their blood pressure, oxygen saturation, consciousness, temperature and respiratory rate using appropriate equipment.
• Conducted ward rounds in a multi-disciplinary team elicited cooperation with fellow health professionals, allowing me to build up my teamwork skills.
