Tesco Colleague – Personal Shopper at Tesco Extra Irvine (2025-03 – Present)
As part of my new role at Tesco I complete personal shopping orders for customers. This job requires me to collect the items from around the shop they have ordered and pack them into the appropriately designated trays assigned to individual customers. To ensure all orders are completed on time, we are given a pick rate to aim for and are timed for each trolley to make sure we are on track and can see the pick rates we are achieving for each individual trolley as well as an overall for the shift.
We are regularly given training to complete regarding safety procedures, waste and stock control as well as other legal training that is relevant to my role. I redid my training for tills and self-scan checkouts allowing me to have a more versatile skill set and be able to work in more departments.
Tesco Colleague (Christmas Temp) at Tesco Extra Irvine (2024-11 – 2025-01)
Over the Christmas period I was trained as a colleague to go onto the tills and serve the customers at the end of their shopping. I was able to operate both cash and card tills which allowed me to further improve my money handling skills as once the tills' money drawer reached a certain amount a cash lift had to be carried out; and also card only tills. While serving customers I was able to operate the till to update quantities and/or remove items that they no longer needed.
I engaged in conversations with customers while scanning through their items, offering help to pack any bags they needed or swap items they may have been damaged or broken before they checked out. Several items needed to be approved due to Challenge 25 laws so if needed I had to ask customers for forms of identification to prove their age. I was also able to operate self-scan checkouts which used the same skills as the other tills making sure any tags from clothing purchased were removed and items like alcohol were approved.
On several occasions I was able to help out in other departments of the store, mainly restocking shelves with new products and ensuring stock rotation was carried out.
Front of House / Supervisor at Seamill House Hotel (2021-05 – 2024-11)
My role as a front of house staff member is to serve both food and drinks to customers. Making sure they feel welcome and are enjoying their time in the hotel and bar/restaurant. I am one of the older members of staff, so I am responsible for training the newer staff members and helping them where they need it.
Taking payments is a key duty in my role and this improved my skills handling cash. I have undertaken the position of the supervisor on shift and I have the responsibility of dealing with any issues that may occur during the shift and I also have the duty of doing the cash-up at the end of the work day.
Waiting staff at Cafe @ the Station (2020-10 – 2020-12)
While working at the cafe, I picked up key communication skills and time management skills. Duties involved welcoming customers into the establishment, taking orders, making a variety of hot drinks, answering any customer questions (e.g. dietary requirements), handling cash, assisting in the preparation of a selection of hot and cold snacks, and lastly following and carrying out any instructions given by management.
Veterinary surgeon at The Oaks Veterinary Surgery (2019-02 – 2019-03)
I developed many skills while I was there for the four weeks of my work experience. I became very observant when the vet was diagnosing any problems the animal may have had and listened carefully while she explained to me what it meant and what she could do to help the animal. I was also responsible for keeping the room clean by wiping down the table after every animal's appointment was over, and by brushing and mopping the floor at the end of the night.
I was also responsible for cleaning away or gathering equipment the vet needed for that particular appointment. I also was shown an x-ray so I could understand what the scan was meant to look like and what was wrong with the animal. This really helped my knowledge of the career and showed me that Veterinary Medicine is definitely the career path I want to pursue.
Veterinary surgeon at Clyde Vet Group - Equine Hospital (2021-06 – 2021-06)
During my time at the equine unit I completed my experience both in the stables of the unit itself but also doing ambulatory work. Over my three days there I observed routine check-ups, vaccinations and dental appointments. On many of the calls I observed ultrasound examinations on mares, learning more about the reproductive cycle in horses.
I also gained handling experience as I assisted the vet while vaccinations were being administered by holding the lead rope. Another skill I learned during my experience was how to put a head collar on a horse and how to carefully remove them from racehorses after surgery.
