I have worked for the National Health Service Since I was 16 years old, first as a GP receptionist and then as an Emergency Department Receptionist. I then discovered that I wanted to care for the patients and not do the administration aspect of the job. I trained as a Healthcare Assistant and was then seconded by my department to do my Nursing Degree.
It was the best decision I could have made, I love my job and providing patient centred care, even in very difficult circumstances. I am calm under pressure and feel able to provide fast, effective emergency care, whilst reassuring my patients and their relatives. I can Triage, and refer on minors to more relevant services, or equally highlight anyone very unwell.
I also care for the highest acuity patients and am able to think I’m my feet and thrive under pressure, whilst remaining calm and reassuring. I also have minors experience, so I can assess and clean and close wounds with glue, sterile-strips or staples and apply plaster of Paris casts to fractures. We care for both adults and paediatrics in my current emergency department and I enjoy the variety of patients and specialities that we see on a day to day basis.
I love my job and the satisfaction of knowing I provided the best emergency care I can, whatever the outcome is the most rewarding aspect. I would love to experience emergency care in another country and share my skills whilst gaining new ones!
