Findlay Tapp

I am a 21-year-old male who studied human geography at the University of Lincoln for 3 years. My passion for geography lies in water management and natural conservation across Europe. Over the summer of 2022 I took part in a placement with the environment agency learning about water legislations during a time of drought.

This opened my eyes to the excitement and opportunity that a professional career can bring. Although I enjoy my time with nature, I also appreciate the architecture and management that goes into cities all across the world which brought me to my degree in the human side of geography. For my final dissertation project, I produced a self-led paper on water quality management and human interactions with waterways, furthering my interest in infrastructure.

For fun throughout my life, I have frequently played squash and rose to a county level in the under 18 category in 2022, reaching 7th in my county. In my free time I have a love of hiking and photography, I have a great interest in travel and have gone to countries all over the world. Alongside geography I have found myself useful for work with IT and especially computers, I have built multiple of my own desktop PCs and have repaired and advised friends and family with any of their computer issues.

I am a calm and easy-going person who is always willing to help, and the public speaking skills I gained in college have allowed me to be easy to talk to and help with work in groups. I am very willing to get involved with activities. Recently I have found an interest in learning languages, spending a year learning mandarin as a hobby before traveling to China and am looking into learning German.

I am not afraid to ask questions and am a quick learner so I will fit in and get my job done efficiently and well. I currently live in Bromsgrove but intend to move to a more convenient location once I secure a position.

Placement - Water Resource Management at Environment Agency (2022-06 – 2022-07)

• Shadowed a prominent member of the environment agencies water resource management team, focusing on effects and responses in times of drought
• Took part in multiple research trips to the river Teme and river Clun in order to document record low water levels and gauge the effect it was having on the local environment
• Participated in multiple zoom and in person meetings discussing changes in water abstraction license legislations during times of drought, in order to find solutions to help relieve stress on the water table and waterways during future droughts

Squash Coach at Barnt Green Sports Club (2021-10 – 2023-08)

• Worked every weekend and helped teach younger athletes how to improve their skills at squash
• Went to country-wide tournaments as a marker as well as a player and provided support to young players from across the regions
• Developed public speaking skills through clear and formal communication with students while maintaining an approachable demeanor

Cook and Kitchen Assistant at Slug and Lettuce Group (2024-06 – 2024-12)

• Worked at both Slug and Lettuce Bromsgrove as well as Lincoln locations
• Became comfortable cooking different types of food and familiar with many types of cooking equipment
• Proficient on both sides of the kitchen whether that be prep work or cooking

Kitchen Assistant at Dry Spy Ltd (2021-06 – 2023-08)

Worked as a kitchen assistant within the Dry Spy restaurant. My responsibilities surrounded helping the chefs excel within the stressful professional kitchen environment. The business operated to an extremely high standard as it often hosted prestigious events and large dinners for Bromsgrove residents, so a high standard of work was essential.

• Tasked with food preparation, stock checks, cleaning, cooking and plating
• Developed working mindset to handle stressful or time dependent tasks

Volunteer Work

Participated in volunteer work throughout life with a belief that helping others can give you just as much joy as personal success.

• Participated in a local stream regeneration project in Bromsgrove on the degrading Battlefield Brook within Sanders Park which was seeing a sharp decline in biodiversity. Planted different types of aquatic plants and grasses along the edge of the stream to improve natural filtration and give habitats to the local water voles
• Took part in pathway clearing work over the summer of 2022 throughout Bromsgrove where public paths in the countryside had become overgrown. Cleared back over 10 pathways allowing easier access for dog walkers, cyclists and fisherman to use the pathways
