Head of meter reading for the south east at Thames Valley Utilities (2024-03 – Present)
I began my career in water meter reading as a Meter Reader, where I developed a thorough understanding of the role, the importance of accurate data collection, and excellent customer service. Through consistently achieving performance targets, demonstrating reliability, and supporting colleagues, I progressed into supervisory positions with increasing responsibility. As my experience grew, I took on responsibility for managing teams, overseeing daily operations, monitoring performance, coaching staff, and ensuring health and safety and quality standards were maintained.
I worked closely with managers to improve efficiency, resolve operational challenges, and deliver high standards of service across the region. My commitment to continuous improvement, strong leadership skills, and ability to motivate and develop teams ultimately led to my promotion to Head of Water Meter Reading for the South East. In this role, I was responsible for leading regional operations, managing managers and field teams, driving performance against key targets, overseeing recruitment and training, and ensuring the safe, efficient, and compliant delivery of water meter reading services across the South East.
Water meter reader at Thames Valley Utilities (2022-03 – 2024-03)
Working as a Water Meter Reader was where my passion for the water industry first began. As the realisation grew that this was the industry I wanted to build a long-term career in, I developed a strong interest in water assets, customer service, and operational problem-solving. During my time at TVU, I spent several months accompanying my Director on ride-alongs, learning about leak detection and advising customers on issues such as the difference between low pressure and low flow, how to shut off their mains supply during an emergency, how to locate boundary boxes, and practical steps to resolve incidents affecting their fresh water supply.
I was the first Water Meter Reader to operate in my area for the company and played a key role in creating and updating data for over 65% of the company's water meter records across Kent and East Sussex. My responsibilities included troubleshooting incorrect or missing meter locations, accurately updating asset records, producing clear location information to assist future operatives, and ensuring assets were fit for purpose. I consistently captured accurate field data while helping to improve the quality, reliability, and usability of the company's asset database.
Emergency Care Assistant at BM Ambulance Service (2019-05 – 2022-05)
I joined the Ambulance Service at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, undertaking one of the most challenging and emotionally demanding roles I think I will ever have to do. My primary responsibility was the dignified recovery and transportation of deceased patients from their homes to temporary mortuary facilities across London. This role required professionalism, compassion, resilience, and the ability to work effectively under immense pressure while supporting colleagues as well as the patients family and treating every patient with the utmost respect and dignity.
Following the pandemic response, I remained with the Ambulance Service and successfully completed my Level 3 qualification in Emergency Care. My role then changed to transporting patients to and from hospital appointments, undertaking emergency blue-light driving for high-dependency patients, and carrying out long-distance patient repatriations from overseas back to the UK. This experience strengthened my ability to remain calm in high-pressure situations, communicate effectively with vulnerable patients/customers and deliver safe, patient-focused care in a wide range of complex and time-critical environments.
Bricklayer at Sprinks Construction (2017 – 2019)
After qualifying as a Bricklayer, I progressed to working independently on a variety of construction projects, demonstrating the trust and confidence my employer had in my abilities. As I gained experience, I was regularly assigned to sites on my own, taking responsibility for setting out substations from technical drawings through to constructing the complete superstructure. This required a high level of accuracy, self-motivation, and organisation, ensuring all work was completed safely, efficiently, and to specification while maintaining excellent quality standards.
Working independently strengthened my problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage projects from start to finish with minimal supervision.
Apprentice Bricklayer (NVQ level 2) at Sprinks Construction (2015 – 2017)
I began my career here as a labourer and after six months decided to start as an Apprentice Bricklayer, successfully completing a two-year apprenticeship five months ahead of schedule. This early achievement reflected my strong work ethic, ability to learn quickly, and commitment to developing high-quality practical skills within the construction industry. Throughout my apprenticeship, I gained experience working on both new build developments and extensions, learning to accurately interpret construction drawings and specifications to ensure work was completed to the required standard.
The role developed my attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and understanding of working safely and efficiently as part of a professional team to deliver projects on time and to a high standard.
Freezer picker at Consort Frozen Foods (2014 – 2015)
This was my first full-time role after leaving education, where I quickly developed a strong work ethic and gained valuable experience working within a fast-paced warehouse and distribution environment. My responsibilities included replenishing stock within large walk-in freezers, accurately picking customer orders from work sheets, and preparing them for dispatch to destinations across the UK. All of this was carried out in temperatures of approximately -25°C, requiring resilience, physical endurance, and the ability to maintain accuracy and productivity in demanding conditions.
The role taught me the importance of teamwork, time management, attention to detail, and consistently delivering high standards in a safety-conscious environment.
Customer Service at The Smugglers Chest (2012 – 2014)
My first ever job was a seasonal weekend role while I was still at school, working in customer service at a local beach shop. This position gave me my first experience of working with the public, handling customer enquiries, operating tills, and providing friendly and efficient service in a busy retail environment. Alongside serving customers, I was responsible for restocking shelves, maintaining product displays, and ensuring the shop remained organised and presentable.
This role helped me develop strong communication skills, confidence when dealing with people, and an understanding of the importance of delivering a positive customer experience.
