My background includes over two decades of experience in art education, and I bring with me a strong interdisciplinary approach informed by both studio practice and academic research. I hold a teaching qualification for Further Education, and while I am unsure whether this directly meets the requirements for temporary teaching roles in schools, I am very keen to explore any possibilities where my skills and experience could be of value.
I am currently seeking a part-time opportunity near Southampton, UK—two days a week—teaching Art and Design or a closely related subject such as Media/photography. At present, I am employed three days a week as an Art Tutor at Oncampus, Winchester School of Art, where I work with international Foundation students to develop their creative and critical skills across a broad range of artistic practices.
I am passionate about nurturing creativity and helping students gain the confidence to express themselves visually and conceptually. If there is any scope for collaboration, I would be delighted to hear from you and to contribute to your department’s work in any way I can.
Thank you for considering my interest—I look forward to the possibility of working together.
Warm regards,
James Johnson-Perkins
I am an experienced international educator, researcher, and award-winning artist with over 20 years of teaching across Higher and Further Education, schools, and gallery education. In the UK, I’ve taught BA Fine Art at Northumbria University, worked as a visiting lecturer at Newcastle University, and taught Interactive Media at Gateshead College—rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted. I was also an Arts Facilitator for three years at the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art.
Internationally, I’ve held senior roles in Oman, Russia, and China. In Oman, I led the BA Fine Art programme at the Scientific College of Design. In Moscow, I was a Senior Lecturer at the British Higher School of Art and Design, working with Garage Museum of Contemporary Art on a major student-led project.
From 2014 to 2022, I worked at the University of Nottingham, Ningbo, China, where I led Art and Design modules, managed teams, revised curricula, and mentored staff and students. I am currently an Art and Design tutor at Oncampus, Winchester School of Art.
My qualifications include a teaching certificate for Further Education, Senior Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA), and recent training in educational leadership and coaching.
I teach a wide range of subjects including Painting, Drawing, Sculpture, Photography, and New Media, and I have a strong knowledge of art history, theory, and interdisciplinary practice.
I’ve delivered lectures on topics from Gender and the Body to Power in Art, Postmodernism, and Contemporary Practice, as well as practical sessions in casting, collage, and experimental drawing and painting. I enjoy working with students from diverse creative backgrounds including Fashion, Architecture, and Graphic Design.
I’m in the fifth year of a part-time Creative Writing PhD, which informs my interest in theory, storytelling, and emerging technologies in art.
