I have been a qualified staff nurse for nearly 14 years. I have been a Deputy Sister at York Hospital for 2 and a half of those years. Through my role I have achieved many transferable skills that I can put forward to this job.
My perception is that my working experience to date has been preparing me for a role such as this. Not only have I acquired the necessary practical abilities, but my capacity for being able to keep a calm and level head in a fast paced and stressful environment has grown with my practice. Having worked on a very busy surgical admissions ward at York Hospital I have been able to enhance my organisational practice as well as my ability to prioritise efficiently.
My leadership and management capability has never been tested more than my time as a senior nurse and in my opinion this has made me a better and stronger person fit to cope with any given situation. I have to manage a very heavy workload and use time management and organisational skills to help prioritise what I need to achieve. This is a skill I have been able to work on from a newly qualified staff nurse to deputy sister.
I feel I am competent in this skill, and I can complete tasks given to me in a timely manner. I can hit targets given to me through my shift in a safe and efficient manner. This is a skill I feel would be important in the job role you have advertised as I am able to work under pressure and prioritise.
I must communicate with people all of the time I am at work. I regularly communicate effectively with various members of the multidisciplinary team regarding my patients. This requires effective, clear communication as its vital everyone involved understands plans that have been put in place for patients.
I am exceptionally diligent in my work and take pride in being able to perform tasks to a high standard. I am also unafraid to push myself out of my comfort zone. I have spent time in A&E on bank shifts, working in a different setting than I am use too.
This pushes me to not only work with new people in a new setting every shift, but also challenge myself on my knowledge and how I can utilise what I know in a new setting as well as relishing the chance to learn something new in a high pressured, stressful environment. Working within the role of a staff nurse in the NHS I have learnt much about myself. I know my own limitations and I am able to enquire to a more senior member of staff if unsure.
I am flexible, reliable and hard working. I am a team player but I can also work autonomously. I work well within the multidisciplinary team and understand that communication is paramount. I treat all everyone as individual, irrespective of sexual orientation, culture, religion and I deliver care specific to their needs.
I am very friendly and approachable. Although i don't have all the skills you have asked for in your application. I am very quick and keen to learn and can pick up new skills very fast.
