Prison Custody Officer at G4S HMP OAKWOOD (2019-03 – Present)
I currently work on a drug recovery unit where I support individuals who are experiencing substance misuse alongside complex mental health needs. My role involves working closely with people who often face multiple and overlapping challenges, including addiction, trauma, severe mental illness, social exclusion, and instability in areas such as housing, relationships, and physical health. In my day-to-day work, I provide practical and emotional support to help service users engage with their recovery journey in a safe, respectful, and non-judgemental environment.
I build therapeutic relationships based on trust, consistency, and empathy, recognising that many individuals have experienced significant adversity and may feel ambivalent or fearful about treatment and change. I support individuals through periods of crisis, relapse, and recovery, adapting my approach to meet their fluctuating mental and emotional needs. Throughout my work, I aim to empower individuals by promoting choice, dignity, and autonomy, while also providing clear boundaries and structured support.
I am committed to trauma-informed and person-centred care, understanding that recovery is not linear and that progress looks different for each individual.
