I’ve just started LAMDA in London studying production arts. I went to Moulin rouge tech day in London and found the passion to want to work backstage in theatre, so I joined Mast Mayflower Studios course where I was part of the crew for their show Periodicals. During my 2 years there, we helped build sets and props, and I was able to learn about all the different areas in the industry.
At college I have been able to try different production roles, but the area I enjoy the most is sound. I have done several projects, including The Lion witch and the wardrobe, where I was a part of the crew. We then worked on SpongeBob where I had the opportunity to shadow the deputy stage manager.
Our most recent project we did was Jekyll and Hyde, where I worked on Sound, assisting with miking actors and doing microphone swaps throughout the show. As part of my course, we got to visit ChamSys for lighting training where we learned how to program a lighting desk as we were creating our own light shows for a band. My college has also taken us on a few trips such as going to Elm studios to go behind the scenes on strictly come dancing and learn how they light the whole show.
We have also been to our local theatre in the Mayflower and went backstage on Aladdin and Mary Poppins where we got to have a tour around the venue and speak to different departments about their roles. In January, I was very lucky to be given the opportunity to travel down to London to do work experience with the team of Hadestown. During this experience I was able to spend time with multiple departments including sound, lighting, automation, and stage management.
This allowed me to understand how each department's role contributes to running the show. I have also recently helped at a festival and was able to shadow lighting, sound, filming and we also did the get in and get out this helped gain even more knowledge about the industry.
