Teaching Placement - Whetley Academy

In June, I returned to my former primary school, Whetley Academy, for a work placement. Being back in the environment where I once studied—and now supporting children as a member of staff—was a really meaningful experience for me. Working alongside my previous teacher reminded me just how much I enjoy teaching and how naturally I connect with young learners.
During my placement, I took on a range of responsibilities such as supervising the children, preparing and tidying up activities, and supporting pupils during lessons. I especially enjoyed helping children who were struggling with their work and seeing the difference a little guidance and encouragement could make. I made sure to present myself as someone the children could trust and talk to, and it felt rewarding when they came to me for help or reassurance.
Alongside the bonds I built with the children, I also developed strong relationships with the staff. They made me feel like part of the team, which helped boost my confidence. This placement really helped me strengthen my communication and time-management skills and confirmed that working in education is something I genuinely have a passion for.

In October, I began my Teaching Assistant apprenticeship, where I work one-to-one with a child who has autism. This role has had a big impact on me, both personally and professionally. Supporting a child with additional needs has helped me understand how important patience, consistency, and empathy are in helping every child feel safe and confident in the classroom.
Working closely with this child has taught me to look at learning in a more flexible and creative way. I've learned to use visual prompts, small step-by-step instructions, and positive reinforcement to help keep them engaged and calm. I've also developed a better understanding of sensory needs and how small changes can make a big difference to a child's comfort and focus.
I regularly work with the class teacher and SENCO to follow the child's personalised learning plan and track their progress. Being part of a team that is all focused on helping one child reach their goals has shown me the power of collaboration in education. Some days can be challenging, but seeing the progress the child makes—no matter how small—makes everything worthwhile.

Gym Receptionist - Maxxout Gym
Working as a Gym Receptionist at Maxxout Gym gave me the chance to build confidence and develop strong customer service skills. I made sure the gym stayed clean and organised by putting weights and equipment back in place, and I enjoyed helping members with their membership enquiries, sign-ups, and payments behind the till. I also got to build positive relationships with members by offering support, selling products, and reminding people about keeping the gym tidy and cleaning equipment after use.
This role taught me how to stay organised during busy periods, communicate clearly, and handle responsibility in a fast-paced environment.
