I’m Livia Wright, a 2023 graduate from The Northern School of Art (formally CCAD) with a 2:1 degree in Costume Interpretation with Design.
I can sew, tailor, pattern cut and have experience with millinery, pattern drafting and hand embroidery, as well as corsetry and some knowledge of leather work. I have undertaken work experience in theatre and TV productions, creating costumes and altering for actors for A Doll’s House, Hello Dolly, Beauty and the Beast Panto, Soverign and Netflix’s film Damsel.
I have sewn and embroidered from a young age, being a member of both Young Embroiderers and Young Quilters. I studied Textiles at College and continued to develop my sewing skills through 3 years at University.
I have a passion for costume and history, specifically a love for historical costume. My final major project (Jadis, the White Witch and Edmund Pevensie from The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe) was heavily influenced by my interest in historic Queens and different periods of history. I also pushed myself to learn new skills, like making my own fabric, leatherwork, ageing and distressing.
I am currently learning how to spin wool with a local textiles group and am also experimenting with natural dyeing as part of an upcoming project for The North York Moors National Park Ryevitalise Project, for which I am creating several garments inspired by the River Rye made from recycled materials. Organising workshops with children, to create the fabric to be used in the garments.
I am dyslexic, but despite this, I volunteered to handle the social media for my class year's Degree Show, and although my dyslexia leads to some ‘interesting’ spellings, I refuse to let it get in the way of my dreams. I am used to hard work, and I can be flexible. I love being part of a creative team, but I am equally comfortable working on my own. I prefer to look for solutions rather than fixate on a problem.
I have a passion for the theatre, films and TV shows and have attended many performances from Shakespeare to Musicals and ballet, as well as being an extra in Jamie Childs’ new film Jackdaw. I am very interested in experiencing and learning about the different requirements for costumes in a professional workplace.
Currently, in my spare time, I volunteer for the North York Moors National Park, where I started as a Young Ranger and, more latterly, as a Young Leader. I am also on the Youth Voice Council for the National Park, helping to organise ways to inspire others to join us and experience the countryside.
I enjoy theatre, films/TV, orienteering, reading and baking. I can also drive and have a clean driving license.
