I am just nearing the end of my role as a casual Lunchtime Supervisor- a new experience for me. I was working specifically with the age range of reception is also I was able to use my skills and experiences to aid with the role-such as, providing Activities for the children to take part in. This role also allowed me to update my paediatric first aid.
There was often language barrier and because of their ages It was sometimes hard to understand them completely- having had the skills of working with the public in the past, I know that patience is key.
Throughout the summer holidays, I worked as a activity leader for the Dscovery, Trust, Wrap Around care, holiday camp At Mowmacre Hill primary school- I worked with all ages from foundation stage up until year six Providing them with fun and quite educational activities.
Before taking on these roles, I decided That I would stay at home to raise my child, I feel I have gained further skills- Building further on my own confidence,by taking attending various groups,stay and plays, alone and making a new friendship network. Realising how isolating motherhood could be, I set up a ‘Mummy and Baby’ meet up- where other mums, like me, could attend with their children and meet other people in the same position.
Prior to this, for 2 years I worked at PlayFit Kids club, where I undertook the role as the Club Co-ordinator,Playworker- for a morning, afternoon and holiday club, based at Stonebow Primary School where I managed the running, planning and finance of the club along with managing two members of staff employed by the company. Also, often helping out at another school-Dovelands Primary School, where I did the same role, when needed. Although, initially, this role was slightly out of my comfort zone- I feel that I decanted skills from all areas of my life into this role.
I am also qualified up to level 6 in Youth and Community Development, with a JNC qualification, where I studied for 3 years at De Montfort University. I have a collection of experiences with working with young people and in and around a variety of settings. I also worked at River Island for 10 years as a part time retail advisor.
From the age of 16 years old I feel this was not only a huge life change- from school -to –work. It was an enormous confidence builder. I gained many skills during this role, great customer service, great confidence, the ability to multitask and working both individually and as a team, and people and communication skills.
Despite being out of my career for the length of time that I was-, I have tried to keep in ‘the know’ of Youth Work by attending some AGM meetings at a local youth club. I have also recently completed the Solihull Approach course and Family First Aid course. Plus, Since 2021 I have a member on the Advisory Board for my childs school- Mowmacre Hill Primary School- as an Appointed Community Member.
With the knowledge gained from completing the Youth and Community Development course, along with working/volunteering in array of settings with young people. I am able to employ my skills, and insight, as a parent and a member of the community to provide advice, and critical thinking,to ensure that the constant improvement of the school. Plus, this role enables you to undertake regular training such as; Safeguarding and Child Protection.
