I need to have good physical stamina to be able to lift children and work at their physical level. I possess a good understanding of how to identify and meet the needs of young children whilst also treating the children, their families, my colleagues, and any visitor with respect, dignity, and professionalism. I must have a thorough understanding of safeguarding children and implementing it every day.
I provide high quality care to all children including children who may be physically and mentally demanding. I assist children in carrying out personal care routines everyday including nappy changing, toileting, changing, hand washing, feeding, and serving food. I also administer first aid when required and document it in a satisfactory way and communicate with and inform the parents at handover.
Along with playing with and stimulating the learning of the children under my care I also must complete observations, assessments, progress checks, and reports on my key children to document their development to inform the child parents of their progress and development. This leads onto communicating effectively with all parents in a professional manner. I supervise all children under my care constantly whilst consistently helping them to develop socially and educationally through activities like reading and games whilst also monitoring their behaviours and personal hygiene.
This leads onto my responsibility to complete planning each week for my key children to aid in the development of their primary and secondary areas of development. This then leads onto keeping records. I must document the day of each child onto an app that the parents are able to view and message us on.
As a room leader I also have the responsibility of keeping a flexible routine for the children in my room and ensuring that the staff know what they are doing to ensure transitions run smoothly. I aid the professional development of my staff ensuring their knowledge and training is up to date stepping up to support them on areas they are not as confident in and adding to their knowledge. As a third in charge, I must ensure the effective running of the rooms and communicate between all staff to make sure that everyone feels supported.
My day to day as a third in charge consists of working out ratios for the entire day across the setting and running the staff lunches and home times so that everybody is covered and ratios are always met. I often carry out the health and safety checks which are first aid boxes, emergency lighting, sleep equipment checks, toy cleaning, fire extinguisher checks, water temperature, emergency routes, garden vegetation, etc. I also know how to report and carry out paperwork and course of action when reporting to MASH and LADO.
I often complete personal tours for potential children and parents. I answer the phone speaking professionally and finding satisfactory solutions. I sometimes support other settings management departments when cover is needed.
