Simrun Idris

HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist with an IBMS-accredited Biomedical Sciences degree from Sheffield Hallam University and strong laboratory experience gained through placements and employment at Sheffield Children's Hospital. During my work across Haematology, Blood Bank, and Clinical Chemistry laboratories, I developed excellent organisational skills, attention to detail, and a strong understanding of health and safety procedures through preparing samples, maintaining equipment, and supporting urgent laboratory testing. I also gained additional laboratory experience through a scholarship at University of Reading, working across food science, pharmacy, and chemistry labs.

My current role as an exam invigilator has further strengthened my ability to work independently, manage workloads effectively, and support staff in fast-paced environments while maintaining professionalism and accuracy. I am passionate about science education and practical laboratory work, and I am eager to contribute my technical knowledge, proactive attitude, and teamwork skills as a Science Technician, supporting the smooth delivery of engaging and safe Biology practical lessons.

• Completed Lab skills in PCR gel electrophoresis, microbiology and gram staining, ELISA, and Western blotting.
• Completion of Lab Health and Safety, data analysis and presentation skills.

Phlebotomy and Lab assistant - Sheffield Children's Acute Clinical Chemistry Laboratory

(2025-09 - 2026-06)

• Phlebotomy blood sample collections on inpatients in accordance to Human Tissue Act and Data Protection Act. Including out of hours work.
• Lab duties: sample reception of urgent inpatient, and routine outpatient samples in acute clinical chemistry.
• Preparing and sending samples for external lab and research centres.
• Checking sample integrity criteria and preparation for testing on Vitro's analysers, booking samples into LIMS Telepath 2000.
• Routine lab duties of sample handling, storage, disposal and stocking of lab consumables.

Phlebotomy and out of hours work - Sheffield Children's Hospital

• Taking capillary blood samples from newborns heels, toddler toes and children's thumbs.
• Required interpersonal skills for patient with learning disabilities, communication between clinicians, parents, and patients.
• In addition, required resilience when convincing children that did not want a blood test.

NHSBT PITS Course - NHSBT Barnsley

(2022 - 2022)

• Learnt about the hazards of blood transfusion, completed case study testing to determine a patient blood type.
• The practical included ABO group cards, cross matches, 2,3,10 cell screening and panels, enzyme panel, phenotype and DCT testing.
• Gained skills which helped me completed my Blood bank validation project, and the importance of non-ABO groups and their impact in hazards of transfusion.

STEM ambassador - High Storrs Sixth Form

(2018 - 2018)

• Supervise and teach experiments to younger pupils from different primary and secondary schools, teamwork between me and other STEM ambassadors.
• Activities carried out include heart dissections, flame emission spectroscopy, thin layer chromatography, and PCR amplification.
• Encouraging BAME and female students to uptake science as a career pathway.

GP work experience - University of Sheffield

(2019 - 2019)

• Shadowing staff and Doctors at a GP surgery as well as completing patient records in the reception and communicating with patients, helped build up my interpersonal skills.
• Understood the importance of patient confidentiality and trust between the patient and clinicians.
• As well the importance of teamwork between NHS staff, including receptionists, blood bottle collection, doctors.

• Lab tour of Haematology department at Hallamshire hospital, saw full blood counters, flow cytometry machines, blood bank freezer and how red blood cell films are made and investigated under microscopes.

Paired reading - High Storrs School

• Student paired reading with a y8 student to help them engage in reading a book in the genre of their interest on a weekly basis.
• This role helped build my experience of encouragement and enthusiasm, getting the pupil to enjoy and find a passion for reading with character.

• Completed sample activities that are completed day to day within these healthcare professionals in a rota system with other students.
• Learnt the importance of managing Paediatric patients in an interesting way, for example using games to encourage Cystic Fibrosis patients to take their treatment.
