I have always had a passion for the welfare, behaviour and conservation of animals, specifically exotic mammals, reptiles and amphibians. However, the last seven years I have spent studying animal science has led to my interest in scientific research. Therefore, I am working towards a research focused career by studying animal science at university level while participating in additional animal related studies and volunteer work in the field.
Work Experience - Animal Husbandry at Bishop Burton College's Animal Management Centre (2021-09 – 2026-05)
During my studies at both college and university level I have provided husbandry to species ranging from reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates to exotic mammals and birds. In addition, within Bishop's kennels, I have provided husbandry to a range of dogs and kept records such as the daily activity charts up to date. Over these 5 years I have also gained experience in animal training with the marmosets, data collection using behavioural observations, physical and visual health checks, setting up enclosures and water testing aquatic enclosures.
Work Experience - Dog Supervisor at In the Playhouse Doggy Day Care (2024-06 – 2024-07)
During this opportunity I supervised different breeds of dogs with varied sizes and temperaments, ensuring there was no dog-dog conflict. Enrichment was made for the dog's mental stimulation and exercise. I was also trusted with giving the dogs their daily meals and treats.
Work Experience - Animal Care at Exotics of The World Ltd (2022-01 – 2023-12)
During my time at Exotics, I was accountable for husbandry tasks every morning, building and setting up enclosures, transporting animals between their enclosures and carry boxes for events, stocking shelves, pricing stock, creating enrichment and 'training' other students for work experience duties. Some species I worked with were large snakes such as reticulated pythons, lizards ranging from leopard geckos to tegus, frogs, and invertebrates, such as tarantulas and scorpions.
Conservation Research Volunteer at Waterberg Conservation Research - Welgevonden Game Reserve (2026-04-06 – 2026-04-11)
Participating in conservation research at this reserve included species monitoring (game counts, documenting coordinates, distances and collecting behavioural data) and habitat assessments (grass and faeces sampling).
Conservation Research Volunteer - Biomonitoring Team at Waterberg Conservation Research - Hanover & Swebeswebe Nature Reserves (2026-03-31 – 2026-04-06)
Being involved in the conservation at these nature reserves further developed my wildlife monitoring skills using camera traps, butterfly traps, dung beetle traps, pitfall traps, river surveys and game counting.
Volunteer at The Natuwa Sanctuary (2025-04-17 – 2025-04-17)
At this animal sanctuary I helped feed and create enrichment for many of their wild rescued animals such as Tapirs, Macaws, and many species of primate.
Volunteer at Refugio de Vida Silvestre Laguna Urpiano Turtle Reserve (2025-04-06 – 2025-04-12)
Night patrols were conducted, notifying the refuge of any Leatherback turtle sightings to protect their eggs from poachers. Night duty also included patrolling the hatchery for predators and poachers. During the day, beach clean ups, tree planting and gardening took place to ensure the turtles had safe passage to the beach and back.
