The Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham is an NHS and military hospital in the Edgbaston area of Birmingham, situated very close to the University of Birmingham. The hospital, which cost £545 million to construct, opened in June 2010, replacing the previous Queen Elizabeth Hospital and Selly Oak Hospital.
- I have been based mainly on the wards and have covered urology, general medicine, neurology, trauma and orthopaedics, CDU, cardiology, cardiothoracic, oncology and palliative care as well as spending 6 months in clinical trials
- I have been able to consult with different teams of doctors on several occasions in order to ensure safe and appropriate use of medications
- This included working alongside advanced nurse practitioners on the cardiothoracic ward
- I clinically checked patient' drug charts to assess the appropriateness of the medications prescribed, for example the doses and any interactions
- During my neurology rotation I attended the IVIg meetings where the Consultants discussed each patient who had received this treatment and its effectiveness
- In my most recent rotation in oncology I have successful completed training in the clinical screening chemotherapy prescriptions
- Aside from the various clinical activities I have also taken part in dispensary duties too
