Here's a number that might surprise you: 75% of new code at Google is now created by AI and checked by engineers. Not typed out by hand. Not fixed line by line. Just generated.

If that's happening at one of the biggest tech companies in the world, think about what it means for the web development company you're about to hire or the one you're already working with.

The short answer? A lot is changing. This post breaks down what, why, and what it means for your business.

The Old Way of Doing Things Is Changing

For a long time, a web development company gave you one thing: skilled people who could build websites faster than your own team could. That's still true. But AI is changing how that work gets done.

Tools like GitHub Copilot and Cursor have changed what a developer can get done in a single day. Jobs that used to take weeks writing basic code, fixing bugs, running tests now take hours. Sometimes less.

This is actually good news for you as a client. But only if you know what to look for.

What AI Is Actually Doing Inside Web Development Teams

Before you hire anyone, it helps to know where AI is being used and how.

Writing Code Faster (and Why That Needs a Human Check)

AI tools can write working code in seconds. Research from GitHub shows that developers using AI finish tasks about 55% faster than those working without it. Projects that used to take months now wrap up in weeks.

But here's something worth knowing: a study from Purdue University found that about 52% of AI-written code answers have mistakes in them. And data from Snyk shows that around 40% of AI-generated code has at least one security problem.

Fast code that no one checks is a risk. A good web development company uses AI to speed things up but still has humans review everything before it goes live.

Checking for Bugs Without Doing It by Hand

Testing used to take up a big part of any project's budget. AI tools can now run thousands of checks on their own, catch problems before the site goes live, and spot issues early.

For you, this means fewer problems after launch. But only if the team you hire is actually using these tools — not just saying they are.

Making Your Website Feel Personal to Each Visitor

This is one of the most exciting things AI can do for your site. AI can look at how each visitor behaves what device they're on, where they came from, how they scroll and show them content that fits them.

It's not just A/B testing anymore. It runs on its own, all the time. A repeat visitor from a big company might see your case studies first. A new visitor on a phone might see a simpler page with a clear offer. The site adjusts by itself.

How the Role of a Web Development Company Is Changing

Here's the big shift: a web development company's job is no longer just about writing code. It's about making smart decisions about how everything gets built.

The best agencies in 2026 are less like coding shops and more like digital advisors. Their developers spend less time on simple tasks and more time on:

Planning how the site is built - making sure all the pieces work well together
Checking AI-written code for security issues - because AI can miss things
Thinking about results - making sure the site actually helps your business grow
Picking the right AI tools - knowing what to use and when

The real value from a development partner today comes from thinking, not just building. If a company only talks about how many developers they have, that's worth questioning.

What This Means for Your Money and Your Timeline

Let's talk numbers.

AI is making development faster. Projects that used to take six to eight weeks are now getting done in three to four. Some firms report timelines being cut by 30 to 50%.

For you as a client, here's what that means in practice:

Faster doesn't always mean cheaper. Good agencies that use AI well still charge for their expertise, not just the hours.
Ongoing help matters more now, not less. A smart website needs to be watched, updated, and improved over time. The work doesn't stop when the site goes live.
Ask what happens to the time saved. Is the agency passing those savings to you in some way, or keeping them?

A good web development company will be upfront about how they use AI and what that means for your project and your bill.

Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Web Development Company in 2026

The old checklist portfolio, reviews, tech stack isn't enough anymore. Here's what to ask now:

About how they use AI:

Which AI tools do you use when building websites?
How do your developers check AI-written code before it goes live?
Can you show me a site where you used AI to make it more personal for visitors?

About results and performance:

What performance scores do your recent projects get? (A well-built site in 2026 should load key content in under 2.5 seconds.)
How do you measure whether the site is working after launch?

About ongoing support:

What help do you offer after the site goes live?
How do you handle security problems that come up over time?

If an agency can't answer these clearly, take that as a warning sign.

Which Web Services Are Getting Better (and Which Are Getting Cheaper)

Not all web development work is changing at the same speed.

Areas where you'll see real improvements:

AI chat on your website: In 2026, these can guide visitors, answer real questions, and pass hot leads to your sales team. It's a big step up from basic chat pop-ups.
Site speed and performance: AI tools can find and fix speed problems faster than ever, without needing a senior developer to spend days on it.
Checking if your site works for all users: AI can catch basic issues, but a real human developer is still needed to make sure the site works well for people with disabilities.

Areas that are becoming more basic (so don't overpay):

Simple landing pages: AI can help build these quickly from templates, so you shouldn't pay top rates for something straightforward.
Basic online store setup: platforms like Shopify already have AI built in. Setting one up doesn't need to cost a lot if it's a standard build.

Knowing which type of project you have helps you set a fair budget and ask the right questions.

What to Expect From Here

AI hasn't replaced the web development company. But it has changed what a good one looks like. According to McKinsey's 2025 State of AI report, 57% of software companies said they saw business gains from using AI. The agencies doing well are the ones using AI to support their team's skills not replace them.

For your business, that means the partner you choose needs both: smart people and smart tools, working together. The good news is that websites can do more than ever before. They can load faster, feel more personal, and help turn visitors into customers all thanks to AI being used the right way.

You just need to find a partner who's actually doing it right
