Laboratory internship focusing on polio virus research and sample processing
- Operation, calibration and maintenance of laboratory equipment
- Receiving polio virus samples from the field officers
- Processing and inoculating the samples
- Assist in preliminary data analysis of the samples received in the laboratory on a monthly basis
- Ensuring all samples are stored in good conditions and giving monthly reports of the suspected cases
- Ensure that test results obtained are entered into appropriate database in an organized and timely manner
- Ensuring adherence to the laboratory Standard Operating Systems (SOPs) for the research program
- Assist in making laboratory reagents and consumables for the research program
- Ensure that adequate Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) measures with respect to samples, reagents and equipment are observed
- Safety and biosafety training

Field attachment program involving sample collection, laboratory analysis, and entomological techniques
- Collection, preservation and testing of samples for various research activities
- Operation, calibration and maintenance of laboratory equipment
- Field activities in collection of mosquito vectors using aspiration and PSC methods
- Entomological techniques in mosquito identification and rearing
- Culture and sensitivity of microbiological samples
- Parasitological techniques
- Safety and biosafety training
- Ensure performance of qualitative and quantitative analysis of biological specimens from study participants. This includes but not limited to ELISA, conventional PCR, real-time reverse transcriptase quantitative PCR
- Adhere to general and study-specific standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the research program
- Ensure that adequate Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) measures with respect to samples, reagents and equipment are observed
- Ensure that sample inventories are organized and up to date
