When people first start following financial markets, they naturally pay attention to price.

A stock trading at $500 may look “expensive,” while a cryptocurrency priced at $0.50 may look “cheap.”

But price alone tells us surprisingly little about the size of an asset.

This is where market capitalization, usually shortened to market cap, becomes useful.

It is one of the most common numbers in both stock and cryptocurrency markets, yet it is also frequently misunderstood.

What Does Market Cap Mean?

At its simplest, market capitalization measures the total market value represented by an asset's outstanding units.

For a publicly traded company, the basic calculation is:

Market Cap = Share Price × Shares Outstanding

Suppose a company has 10 million shares outstanding and each share trades at $20.

Its market capitalization would be:

10,000,000 × $20 = $200 million

The same general idea is used in cryptocurrency markets, although the terminology changes.

For a cryptocurrency:

Market Cap = Current Price × Circulating Supply

If a digital asset has 100 million tokens in circulation and each token trades at $2:

100,000,000 × $2 = $200 million

This is why looking at price alone can be misleading.

A $1 Asset Isn't Necessarily “Cheaper” Than a $10,000 Asset

Imagine two hypothetical digital assets.

Asset A

Price: $1
Circulating supply: 10 billion
Market cap: $10 billion

Asset B

Price: $1,000
Circulating supply: 1 million
Market cap: $1 billion

Asset B has a unit price that is 1,000 times higher.

Yet its total market capitalization is only one-tenth of Asset A's.

This illustrates an important principle:

Unit price and market size are different concepts.

A low unit price does not automatically mean an asset is undervalued, just as a high unit price does not automatically mean it is expensive.

Why Is Market Cap Useful?

Market capitalization gives investors and researchers a standardized way to compare assets of very different sizes.

In stock markets, companies are commonly described as large-cap, mid-cap, or small-cap companies.

The exact definitions vary, but the basic purpose is straightforward: market cap provides an approximate indication of a company's market size.

Crypto markets use similar language.

Bitcoin, for example, may have a much higher unit price than many other digital assets, but comparing cryptocurrencies by market capitalization provides considerably more context than comparing their token prices alone.

Market Cap Can Change in Two Ways

Because market capitalization depends on both price and supply, changes in either variable can affect the result.

For stocks, the number of outstanding shares may change through share issuance, buybacks, stock-based compensation, and other corporate actions.

For digital assets, circulating supply can change as tokens are issued, unlocked, burned, mined, or otherwise enter or leave circulation.

This makes market cap a dynamic figure rather than a permanent measurement.

Market Cap Does Not Mean That Much Money Was Invested

This is one of the most important misconceptions.

Suppose a cryptocurrency has a market capitalization of $5 billion.

That does not mean investors collectively deposited exactly $5 billion into the asset.

Market capitalization is a calculation based on:

Current Price × Circulating Supply

It is not a bank balance.

A relatively small amount of trading activity can sometimes move the market price. Once the price changes, the calculated market capitalization of every circulating unit changes with it.

So a $1 billion increase in market cap does not necessarily mean exactly $1 billion of new money entered the market.

Circulating Supply vs. Maximum Supply

Crypto introduces another important distinction.

A digital asset may have several different supply figures:

Circulating Supply
Tokens currently considered to be circulating in the market.

Total Supply
The total number of existing tokens, subject to the project's supply definitions.

Maximum Supply
The maximum number of tokens that can ever exist, when such a limit applies.

Market capitalization normally uses circulating supply.

But another metric, Fully Diluted Valuation (FDV), attempts to estimate valuation using a broader future or maximum supply figure.

This can produce a very different number.

What Is Fully Diluted Valuation?

A simplified version of FDV is:

FDV = Current Token Price × Maximum or Fully Diluted Supply

Imagine a token trading at $5.

Only 20 million tokens are currently circulating, but the maximum supply is 100 million.

Its current market cap would be:

$5 × 20 million = $100 million

Its fully diluted valuation could be:

$5 × 100 million = $500 million

That's a substantial difference.

It tells us that a large proportion of the potential supply has not yet entered circulation.

FDV therefore adds another layer of context when examining digital assets.

Where BYDFi Fits Into the Research Process

When researching a cryptocurrency, market capitalization should not be viewed in isolation.

A practical workflow is to examine market-cap and supply data alongside the actual trading market.

After checking broader market statistics, I may open BYDFi to examine the relevant trading pair, current price, recent movement, and trading activity.

The two types of information answer different questions.

Market-cap data helps describe the approximate scale of an asset.

Trading data helps describe what is happening in the market at that moment.

Neither provides a complete picture on its own.

Is a Higher Market Cap Always Better?

No.

Market capitalization measures size. It does not automatically measure quality.

A large market cap does not guarantee that an asset will increase in value.

A small market cap does not automatically indicate greater potential.

Market cap also tells us very little by itself about factors such as:

liquidity, revenue, profitability, adoption, technology, token distribution, governance, regulatory risk, or future supply.

It should therefore be treated as one metric among many.

A Simple Checklist

When you see a market-cap figure, ask:

What is the current price?

What is the circulating supply?

How much additional supply could enter circulation?

What is the fully diluted valuation?

How liquid is the market?

Why is the market assigning this valuation to the asset?

Those questions are considerably more useful than simply asking whether a token's price “looks cheap.”

Final Thoughts

Market capitalization is a simple calculation, but it can dramatically improve the way financial assets are compared.

The key lesson is straightforward:

Price tells you the value of one unit.

Market cap provides context about the value represented by all outstanding or circulating units.

Neither number tells you whether an investment is good or bad.

But understanding the difference prevents one of the most common mistakes beginners make: assuming that a low-priced asset must automatically be cheaper or have more room to grow.

In financial markets, a small number on the price screen does not necessarily mean a small valuation.

Sometimes the denominator is where the real story is hiding.
