For the last academic year I have been working as a full-time ESL teacher at Satit Pattana Secondary School in Bangkok. I therefore have a full academic year of professional experience teaching ages 12-18. This includes lesson planning and creating materials, grading and tracking the progress of my students, and writing reports. In this time I have utilised and developed my creative and organisational skills, and demonstrated my ability to teach a range of ages and ability levels. Moreover, it has been rewarding to build a relationship with students and witness their progress. This is something that I am excited to experience more of in this career while I endeavour to further improve my teaching skills.
Prior to the aforementioned job, I successfully completed a full-time CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults) course in Spain, during which I learned to teach English in both theory and practice. I learned how to plan effective lessons, along with various teaching methods to ensure that students learn, engage with and retain the information taught. I truly enjoyed this course and it made me realise that a career in teaching is something I want to pursue.
Furthermore, I have earlier classroom experience as a voluntary tutor/ assistant in French and Spanish language classes. With this experience I began acquiring skills such as preparing classroom materials, running activities smoothly, and working with children both one-to-one and in a classroom setting. In addition to teaching experience in a school setting, I have worked as an au pair in Spain several times, looking after children between the ages of 3 and 14. As well as teaching English, I am confident in caring for children outside of a classroom environment in terms of their well-being.
Aside from teaching experience, my roles in customer service and as a police officer have honed my natural communication skills. As such I can communicate with all kinds of people in numerous circumstances, from relaxed to very high-pressure. This experience also demonstrates other traits including patience, listening skills, and problem solving.
Finally, as a person I am naturally very empathetic and caring about others. I believe that this plus my friendly demeanour makes students feel that they can approach me with problems both within and outside of the classroom. I take teaching very seriously, and I understand and enjoy the responsibility of inspiring students to achieve their full potential.
