Artificial Intelligence has revolutionized the process of face recognition and comparison with a human face. Now a facial recognition service can compare face features in seconds, and it can be used for identity verification, security, and image comparison. Despite the evolution of AI, facial recognition is still limited to analyzing physical facial features instead of genetic makeup. This means that it can determine how similar or different faces are, but it cannot actually provide scientific proof of biological relationships. When people know how the technology works, what it is used for, and how it will fare under different conditions, they can better understand the technology's findings.

What is AI-based facial recognition, and how does it work?

AI-based facial recognition is a technology that uses machine learning algorithms to analyze facial features from photographs or videos. The system detects landmarks like eyes, nose, mouth, forehead, and jawline and forms a digital facial template.

This template is then matched against another image or another set of facial templates that have been stored. When the number of common facial features is large enough, the system calculates the probability that the images are of the same person or of persons having similar facial features. The analysis is limited to appearance, and should not be used as a substitute for genetic testing or as an indication of biological relationships.

What accuracy can be expected of contemporary facial recognition technology in determining identity?

High-quality images and well-defined facial features make facial recognition systems highly accurate in modern times. Best performance occurs when pictures are taken from the same angle, under good lighting, and without obscuring the face of the person.

Facial recognition isn't foolproof, though. The results can vary due to image quality, age, facial expressions, environment, etc. Similarly, facial similarity testing should not be construed as evidence of a true biological relationship between two people. People who resemble each other might have none of the same genetic heritage, and family members that are genetically similar can have distinct physical differences.

How is facial recognition being used in various industries?

AI facial recognition technology has numerous real-world applications.

For web-based services, identity proofing is the process of verifying the identity of the user.
Security on smartphones and devices.
Airport and border identification systems.
Building & workplace access control.
Police investigations conducted, pursuant to law. Police investigations undertaken (where legal).
Digital image management, photo organization.
Face-to-face identification in research and for personal reasons.

These applications are based on the identification or comparison of facial features, as opposed to assessing inherited genetic traits.

What are the factors that may contribute to the inaccuracy of facial recognition systems?

There are a number of factors that might affect the effectiveness of facial recognition software.

Not having proper lighting or blurring.
Side-profile photographs.
Glasses, masks, hats, or facial coverings.
Facial Expressions that alter facial features.
Changes in the body's appearance with age.
Low image resolution.
Different camera angles.

Providers such as Face DNA Test and others offer a facial recognition analysis service to compare faces and also DNA-based relationship testing services with approved laboratories. This distinction is important for people to be aware of, as facial recognition identifies the face, while DNA tells the difference between the genes inherited from one's parents.

Conclusion

While facial recognition is a valuable technology for identification and facial comparison, it has significant limitations. A facial recognition system can calculate visual similarity, but not scientifically prove familial or biological connections. Genetic testing is still the scientific method accepted for questions concerning biological relatives.

Facial comparison tools and access to a DNA testing service by facilities like Face DNA Test enable people to investigate facial similarities while emphasizing that biological relations are established by examining the DNA, not appearances alone.
