What is the point?
Greg Rolfe
Pastor of a small church.

I have listened to a lot of people discuss their concerns about life. I have heard a lot of people complain about life but to be honest, if all we have in life is less than 120 trips around the sun what is the point? Why complain? And to look at this even more accurately if all there is are these seemingly useless trips around the sun what is the point at all?
I know you have heard many people complain about their lives and upon occasion, you might even have joined in. Why? What did you or they gain? If all we have is this life why spend all the time struggling. I have written multiple posts on social interaction, some of which have actually been read. ( Yeah, it was a shock to me too.) But how often do we ask the very reasonable question “What is the point?”
What is the point of life if this is all it is? Why spend all the effort we do to obtain things that have no true value? The end of every life is death. It doesn't matter if it takes one or one hundred years to reach that death we all still die. What was the point of gaining stuff? Now I agree some stuff is fun to have, a warm house, a car we enjoy driving, and maybe even drinks with little umbrellas in them. But are they worth all the fuss?
Now there are many who say that this life is simply the start of eternity. To many, this life is just one in a number of attempts to obtain perfection. Well, having lived in multiple countries I don't think anyone is getting the hang of it yet. Still, others hold to the belief that this life is simply the start of eternity and what comes next is based on what we choose during this one.
Regardless of what you believe you still must determine one thing, what is the point? Across the entire world there is a basic belief that suicide is wrong. (Fell free to check it out.) Where did this belief come from? Why if there is no point to life would we hold this belief? Let's be honest most of us are smart enough to understand that life has enough problems and frustrations to encourage self-harm but we each have within ourselves a desire to continue, why?
Just for the record I am very much pro living life! Each of us faces trials and opportunities that can feel like harsh realities yet we each strive onward, why? What is the point? It has got to be more than obtaining the next toy. The shiny new toy tarnishes to quickly and the next adventure pales all too soon. Yet onward we strive always seeking to make a success at whatever we have chosen to peruse.
Is your life simply filled with transients? With death inevitable what else is there? There must be something, we all feel it, we all know it, yet what is it?
Do yourself the biggest favor you have to give and take the time to find the point.
Blessings
