About The Role The Information Technology Services Directorate at ORNL is seeking a highly skilled Python Developer to join the Research and Development Solutions team. This role is pivotal in supporting the laboratory's research objectives by developing and maintaining advanced spatial data platforms, geospatial applications, and associated technologies.

The successful candidate will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including geographers, physicists, engineers, and computer scientists, to deliver innovative solutions that enhance research capabilities. The position offers the flexibility of remote work and involves engaging in projects that span spatial computing, real-time data platforms, and machine intelligence systems.

The Python

Developer will play a key role in designing, developing, and deploying software that facilitates research excellence and operational efficiency.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in a scientific or technical field with at least 5 years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
• Proficiency in software development best practices, including Agile methodologies
• Experience with version control systems such as Git/GitFlow
• Familiarity with project management tools like JIRA or Asana
• Strong experience with open-source tools, OGC web services, and web development frameworks
• Hands-on experience with data collection, ETL processes, and data management
• Proficiency in programming languages such as Python and Java
• Knowledge of spatial data platforms and geospatial applications
• Experience with spatial databases like PostgreSQL with PostGIS
• Understanding of real-time data architectures and map service libraries
• Familiarity with containerization technologies including Docker, Docker-Compose, and Kubernetes
• Experience with additional languages such as C, C#, C++, and SQL is a plus
• Previous experience in government, scientific, or highly technical environments is preferred
• Ability to manage complex research and security requirements effectively

Responsibilities

• Partner with research organizations to support research excellence and ensure successful project delivery
• Design, develop, and manage spatial data platforms and related geospatial technologies
• Build and maintain solutions within SaaS and DaaS environments to facilitate research workflows
• Deliver capabilities, services, and cost-effective solutions that improve research outcomes
• Enable researchers to focus on their core work by minimizing IT-related challenges and providing technical support
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including photogrammetrists, geographers, physicists, and engineers
• Contribute to research, development, integration, testing, and deployment of spatial computing and machine intelligence systems
• Develop geospatial applications, software, and digital map layers as service-based solutions
• Support research dissemination through peer-reviewed journals, technical reports, conferences, and open-source repositories
• Work closely with researchers and project sponsors to gather, understand, and implement project and security requirements
• Optimize workflows and monitoring solutions for 24/7 operational support, reducing off-hours work
• Utilize collaboration tools such as Email, Jira, Confluence, Teams, and Slack to maintain effective communication
