Lead Java Developer

We are hiring a Lead Java Developer with 12+ years of experience to join our Information Technology

Group to serve as the technical lead for a delivery team — driving architecture, owning end-to-end technical delivery, and building enterprise-grade Java applications within a large-scale insurance and administrative processing environment.

The ideal candidate brings deep hands-on experience in Java application architecture and production support with the ability to lead a team of developers (onshore & offshore), keep them unblocked and on track, and resolve critical technical issues under pressure in regulated industries such as life insurance and financial services. Strong communication skills, confidence in technical decision-making, and a delivery-focused mindset is essential. This is a technical leadership role and does not require direct people management responsibilities.

JOB FUNCTIONS

· Define application architecture, integration patterns, non-functional requirements, and technical standards for designing, modernizing, and evolving enterprise-grade Java applications in large-scale insurance and administrative processing environments.

· Lead the full Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) including requirements analysis, design, development, testing, and release.

· Develop and support RESTful APIs, SOAP services, and enterprise integration components using Spring Boot and Spring MVC.

· Design and implement microservices architectures with Spring Cloud and related frameworks.

· Evaluate technology solutions, conduct architecture reviews, and establish technical direction for new initiatives and modernization efforts.

· Develop, optimize, and monitor batch processing workflows and nightly/weekly batch cycles for high-volume data processing environments; troubleshoot batch cycle failures and ensure timely restoration within defined SLAs.

· Provide production support for business-critical applications, including root cause analysis, debugging complex defects in live environments, incident resolution, and performance tuning with minimal disruption to business operations.

· Integrate applications with relational databases (Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL) using Hibernate, Spring Data JPA, and optimized SQL queries.

· Design multi-tier enterprise applications applying proven design patterns such as MVC, Singleton, Factory, and DAO to ensure scalability and maintainability.

· Act as the technical lead for the development team — actively track individual progress against sprint commitments, proactively identify and remove technical blockers, and ensures the team remains on track to deliver within agreed timelines.

· Provide hands-on technical mentorship and guidance to junior and mid-level developers; conduct code reviews, set and enforce coding standards, and serve as the primary technical escalation point within the team.

· Enforce code quality standards through JUnit/Mockito-based testing and rigorous peer code review processes.

· Manage version control with Git with effective branching strategies, commits, pull request workflows, and release tagging; mentor team members on Git best practices, branching conventions, and collaborative workflow standards.

· Produce and maintain Technical System Design Documents (TSD), architecture decision records, and solution design documentation in collaboration with stakeholders.

· Engage with business stakeholders, product owners, and domain subject matter experts to gather requirements, clarify functional expectations, and provide technical recommendations that align delivery with business objectives.

· Participate in Agile/Scrum ceremonies, contribute to sprint planning, and communicate technical progress clearly to non-technical stakeholders.

· Support Java applications deployed to Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS), including deployment coordination, configuration management, and cloud-native operational practices.

· Define integration strategies across internal platforms, third-party systems, APIs, batch interfaces, and managed file transfer solutions.

· Leverage automation and process improvements to enhance engineering productivity, delivery quality, and team adoption.

QUALIFICATIONS

· Proven 12+ years of hands-on Java development experience, with demonstrated ability to design, architect, debug, and reason through complex enterprise Java systems — including multi-threading, memory management, and distributed processing — independently.

· Deep expertise and hands on experience in Java 17/21+ including multi-threading, concurrency, Streams API, lambda expressions, collections framework, generics, and JVM performance optimization.

· Strong experience with the Spring ecosystem: Spring Boot 3.x, Spring MVC, Spring Security, Spring Data JPA, Spring REST, and Spring Cloud, with a proven ability to select and apply the right frameworks when designing, modernizing, and evolving enterprise applications.

· Extensive experience with batch processing systems, including nightly and weekly batch cycle setup and management with predecessor/successor job dependencies, FTP-based file transfers, automated notifications, batch monitoring, and failure recovery using enterprise workload automation and job scheduling platforms (e.g., Control-M or equivalent).

· Experience providing production support for business-critical applications, including incident analysis, root cause identification, troubleshooting, performance tuning, defect resolution, and on-call support within SLA-driven environments.

· Strong proficiency in developing and consuming RESTful APIs, SOAP services, and event-driven integrations, along with building production-grade microservices using Spring Boot and Spring Cloud.

· Hands-on experience with relational databases including Oracle, SQL Server, and MySQL; proficient in SQL, PL/SQL, triggers, indexing, query optimization, and ORM frameworks (Hibernate, Spring Data JPA) including entity mapping, lazy/eager loading, and transaction management.

· Strong experience with Git and GitHub, including branching strategies, pull requests, code reviews, release tagging, and GitHub-based development workflows.

· Working knowledge of file transfer mechanisms between Azure cloud storage (Blob Storage, Azure Files, etc.) and on-premises systems, including secure data exchange patterns and integration approaches.

· Define, guide, and review CI/CD pipeline implementation standards using GitHub Actions, including automated builds, test execution, and deployment workflows.

· Hands-on experience deploying and supporting Java applications on Microsoft Azure, including AKS, Docker/containerization, configuration management, and cloud-native operational practices.

· Proficiency in code quality and testing tools such as SonarQube, JUnit, and Mockito

· Experience with build automation tools such as Maven and Gradle.

· Experience with observability and monitoring tools (Prometheus, Grafana).

· Command of Linux/Unix environments including command-line tools, shell scripting, and system debugging.

· Experience with API gateway solutions, OpenAPI/Swagger documentation and API security concepts such as OAuth2 and JWT.

· Strong understanding of SOLID principles, Object-Oriented Design (OOD), and software design patterns (MVC, Factory, Singleton, DAO, Observer).

· Experience gathering and translating business requirements into Azure DevOps (ADO) user stories and technical tasks; ability to coordinate with offshore/distributed teams.

NICE TO HAVE

· Experience in life insurance, health insurance, or financial services administration platforms.

· Experience supporting policy administration, commission, billing, claims, conversion, or related insurance platform capabilities.

· Experience with message broker platforms such as Apache Kafka or RabbitMQ.

· Familiarity with NoSQL databases such as MongoDB or Redis.
