Job description
What you’ll build
- Design, build, and own high-performance backend services and APIs in Java 17/21, using Spring Boot, Spring Cloud, Quarkus, or Micronaut
- Architect microservices and event-driven systems with REST, gRPC, GraphQL, Kafka, RabbitMQ, or similar messaging platforms
- Model data and tune queries across PostgreSQL, MySQL, Oracle, MongoDB, Redis, and Elasticsearch, with attention to transactions, consistency, and scale
- Write clean, testable code with JUnit 5, Mockito, Testcontainers, and contract testing, and keep quality high through thoughtful code reviews
- Profile and tune the JVM: garbage collection, memory, threading, virtual threads, and concurrency, so services stay fast and predictable
- Containerize and deploy on Docker and Kubernetes across AWS, Azure, or GCP, working closely with platform and DevOps teams
- Build and improve CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, Jenkins, GitLab CI, ArgoCD) and ship small, safe, frequent releases
- Add observability with logs, metrics, and tracing (OpenTelemetry, Datadog, Grafana, Splunk, New Relic) and lead calm, blameless incident reviews
- Build secure services with OAuth2, OIDC, JWT, secrets management, and OWASP best practices, and support audits (SOC 2, PCI-DSS, HIPAA) where they apply
- Modernize legacy monoliths and older Java versions, including migrations to Spring Boot 3, Jakarta EE, and cloud-native architecture
- Write design docs and ADRs, lead technical discussions, and help the team make sound architecture decisions
- Mentor mid-level and junior engineers through pairing, reviews, and career conversations
- Use AI-assisted coding tools (Copilot, Claude, or similar) to speed up boilerplate, tests, and refactoring, while owning and reviewing every line that ships
- Partner with product managers, designers, QA, and security to turn fuzzy goals into reliable features
- Take part in a fair on-call rotation and keep runbooks and documentation current
Where you could grow
- Level Typical experience What you’ll own
- Senior Java Developer - 5-8 years : Services and features end to end, technical design for major initiatives, code review standards, and mentoring mid-level engineers
- Staff / Lead Java Engineer - 8-12 years : Architecture across multiple teams, platform and framework decisions, cross-team projects, and raising engineering standards
- Principal Engineer / Engineering Manager (optional paths) - 12+ years : Either company-wide technical strategy and deep individual-contributor influence, or people leadership with hiring, coaching, and delivery ownership
We use a dual career ladder with written promotion criteria and regular career conversations. Many of our engineers have moved into architecture, platform engineering, SRE, data engineering, and engineering management.
