About The Role
As a Lead Software Engineer at Humana, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of Pharmacy Benefit Management (PBM) technology within a dynamic, agile environment. You will serve as a technical authority, guiding architectural decisions, ensuring high-quality engineering practices, and delivering scalable backend and API solutions that support critical healthcare operations. Your expertise will directly impact the efficiency, security, and reliability of systems that serve millions of members, pharmacists, and clinical partners.This position offers an exciting opportunity for a seasoned backend/API engineer to lead complex technical initiatives, mentor engineering teams, and drive innovation in healthcare technology. You will collaborate closely with product managers, architects, and cross-functional teams to develop enterprise-grade solutions that improve healthcare delivery and outcomes.
Qualifications
- 8+ years of progressive experience in software engineering, preferably within large-scale or enterprise environments
- 2+ years of technical leadership experience (e.g., team lead, senior lead, tech lead)
- Strong expertise in backend API development and modern engineering practices such as automated testing, CI/CD, and cloud-native design
- Demonstrated passion for building solutions that enhance the healthcare experience for millions
- Proficiency in designing, implementing, and maintaining secure, high-performance APIs and backend services
- Excellent communication skills for documenting and conveying technical concepts effectively
- Ability to make informed architectural tradeoffs and lead technical discussions
Responsibilities
- Lead the technical delivery and refinement of backend and API development initiatives, translating complex requirements into scalable solutions
- Design, build, and maintain mission-critical PBM APIs that ensure data integrity, security, and high availability
- Drive engineering excellence through rigorous code reviews, best practice coaching, and automation enhancements
- Ensure systems adhere to enterprise security, performance, and architectural standards while collaborating with architects on long-term strategies
- Create and maintain comprehensive technical documentation, including API contracts, architectural diagrams, and operational runbooks
- Communicate technical risks, tradeoffs, and decisions clearly across teams to facilitate informed decision-making
- Mentor and coach engineering team members, fostering a culture of craftsmanship, continuous learning, and innovation
- Identify and proactively address performance, quality, and reliability issues within the platform
