Human Resources Generalist - Wolverine Pipe Line Co.

After working as a Safety & Regulatory Analyst in the SH&E group for several years, I was interested in learning new aspects of the business. An opening became available in Human Resources, so I transferred into that department in a completely different type of role. As an HR Generalist, my responsibilities include:
- Recruiting for all open positions at the company, including vetting resumes, conducting phone interviews, conducting and coordinating onsite interviews.
- Managing the hiring process from start to finish, including creating offer letters, communicating offers, completing pre-employment background checks, transcript reviews, and drug and alcohol testing, and arranging day one orientation.
- Employee benefits management for medical, dental, vision insurance, short term disability, personal time, vacation and vacation purchase program, and employee wellness program.
- Responsible for all employee relations events, including a company picnic for approximately 150 attendees, holiday dinner for headquarters, all service anniversary luncheons, retiree dinners, monthly office birthday celebrations, charitable events such as Adopt a Family during the holidays and a Day of Caring for a United Way affiliated organization, and all other one-off events that pop up for celebration or as a thank you to employees.
- Manage annual enrollment from start to finish, including creating materials for mailing, company-wide communications regarding timing and benefits available, tracking all plan changes as they are submitted, entering all changes into the payroll system Paychex Flex and the time and attendance system Replicon.
- Responsible for biweekly payroll changes as they arise, such as pay rate changes, insurance changes, pay adjustments.
- Personnel change management, completing several activities as needed for personnel changes for hiring, separation, and transfers.
- Continue to manage the company drug and alcohol program.

In my first role as Business Services Specialist, I took on any additional responsibilities I could to learn about the pipeline business. I was interested in safety, training, and understanding Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) regulatory requirements. I was promoted to Safety and Regulatory Analyst and my responsibilities included:
- Owner or administrator of five process safety management (PSM) systems ensuring PHMSA compliance.
- Coordinator of company PSM program.
- Coordinated shareholder audits of PSM programs every 3 – 5 years.
- Coordinated internal audits of PSM programs every 3 - 5 years.
- Owner of 20+ company manuals requiring annual reviews, training, and regulatory compliance.
- Participated on multiple PHMSA field and headquarters audits.
- Implemented and provided company-wide training for behavioral based safety (BBS) program.
- Created sharing tools for BBS program, including key indicators and analysis of incidents (losses and near losses) over time.
- Led and participated in multiple loss and near loss investigations, including preparing learning presentations for sharing company-wide.
- Participated in multiple Emergency Response drills – ICS-300 level trained, HAZWOPER 40 trained (expired). Served as Safety Officer and Logistics Section Chief in annual drills and served as Logistics Section Chief in an actual emergency response event.
- Managed the company training program to ensure compliance with OSHA, PHMSA/OQ (Operator Qualification), and company standards.
- Created tracking tools to measure training progress and document proficiency in two separate field employee tracks, which spanned over three to five years for each person.
- Became a certified Smith System Defensive Driving training course instructor; trained and tested all employees.
- Oversaw the company drug and alcohol program (PHMSA, FMCSA, and company testing pools).
Business Services Specialist - Wolverine Pipe Line Co.

My career at Wolverine Pipe Line Company started in an administrative role, supporting the Business Services group, specifically assigned to the Right-of-Way group. The role involved reviewing construction plans and easements as well as managing the air patrol program. Responsibilities included:
- Review construction plans for encroachments or safety concerns.
- Review and interpret easements to summarize and communicate rights in the company right-of-way.
- Track weekly inspections for the air patrol program to ensure inspection intervals meet regulatory standards.
- Work with a third party one-call ticket management system (IRTHNet/IRTH) to set up internal Damage Prevention Specialist responsibility areas, buffer zones, and automated ticketing behavior.
- Create tools for tracking, monitoring, and organizing the department due to a previous lack of administrative help.
- Draft encroachment agreements as well as letters to landowners and companies regarding company policies and rights.
- Contractor management – manage contractor safety and BBS compliance, D&A compliance, OQ compliance.
