I am an educator and resident of the Southwest Side of Chicago. My practice is grounded in student agency, activism, and innovation. I believe every unit should be responsive to the questions of the students I teach and that collaboration and differentiation are the best ways to achieve this. It is my priority to ensure that students see themselves and others in my curriculum and feel empowered to participate in the world.
I am an educator that work at an IB, dual-language school for 5 years for 4th and 5th grade. In this time I co-developed seven dual-language units that integrated English Language Arts, Social Studies, and Science into thematic units such as artistic expression, environmental justice, architectural city design, government systems, and space exploration. Teaching in a unique setting with 110 students and four lead teachers allowed me to gain extensive experience co-teaching, differentiating instruction, and tailoring strategies to meet the needs of diverse learners, including English language learners.
In addition, I am a faculty member at Malcolm X College and teach Adult ESL classes. I have prepared curriculum at the 100, 200, and 300 levels. I have taken my experiences in the general education field and used it to bring interactive and varied activities into my ESL classes.
Finally, I work as an instructor at Arthur Murray Dance Studio. My proclivity for coaching and systems-building was recognized within three months of being hired at Arthur Murray Chicago, where I was incorporated into developing a training system for new staff.
I have my Master of Arts in Teaching from the University of Chicago where I specialized in Urban Education. I am certified to teach general education 1st-8th grade and have ELA and Social studies certifications. In addition, I have my Bilingual Teacher Certification - Spanish for grades K-12 as well as my ESL certification.
