I was a caregiver for my neighbor while her husband worked as an over-the-road truck driver. I assisted her with daily hygiene, cooking, housekeeping, and any tasks she was unable to manage on her own. There were many times when I was called unexpectedly to help, especially on days when her symptoms were severe.

As her COPD progressed, her needs increased, and she and her husband reached out to hospice for additional support. She had paperwork prepared for me to finalize, but due to the advanced stage of her illness, she passed away before I was able to complete it.

Caregiver at Self-employed (2015-09 – 2022-03)

I was a live-in caregiver for my elderly father, providing support 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Caregiving is not a role you step in and out of—it becomes your entire life. My responsibilities included cooking, cleaning, managing his medications, handling all of his finances, and maintaining his home and property inside and out.

I also took full responsibility for his laundry and personal hygiene, ensuring he was clean, comfortable, and cared for with dignity. Because my father had dementia, each day required deep empathy, patience, and the ability to stay calm when routines shifted or confusion increased. A caregiver's life means constantly anticipating needs, staying alert at all hours, and balancing physical tasks with emotional support.

It means creating structure, offering reassurance, and providing safety for someone who depends on you completely. Caring for my father taught me resilience, compassion, and the ability to remain steady under pressure. It strengthened my attention to detail and reinforced the importance of treating every moment—and every person—with dignity and respect.

My duties included greeting customers, operating the cash register and completing paperwork, sorting laundry for pickup, and preparing finished dry cleaning with bags and tags. This location was on Oak Hill Road in Evansville, Indiana. I also worked at the main plant on Fares Avenue whenever they needed additional assistance, performing the same responsibilities.
