Hello, I'm Joshua Tomioka, a senior at Rutgers University in New Brunswick studying in Public Health. I am also pursing a certificate in Health Disparities. My academic focus was drawn after learning about the field of epidemiology, specifically the crucial responsibilities of field epidemiologists in disaster response and disease prevention, as well as pharmacoepidemiologists in examining drug effects on populations.
Conversations with my father, who works in the pharmaceutical industry, have deepened my grasp of data science and its implications in public health, motivating me to keep everyone well and safe.
I am particularly interested in both field epidemiology and pharmacoepidemiology, and I intend to use my education and future graduate studies to advance effective research and evidence-based solutions. My goal for the future is to earn a Master's degree in Epidemiology so that I can contribute to data-driven approaches that improve public health outcomes.
I am actively looking for internships or jobs in Public Health or Epidemiology to obtain hands-on experience that will help me pursue my interest for community health.
I have a diverse background in public health, aquatic safety, education, and customer service. Currently, I serve as a Water Safety Intern at Raritan Valley YMCA, where I develop and implement water safety education programs for children and parents, emphasizing accident prevention and emergency response. I also work as a Lifeguard at Rutgers University–New Brunswick, ensuring swimmer safety through proactive risk management and emergency interventions.
Previously, I was a Shift Leader/Head Lifeguard at Graydon Pool, overseeing waterfront safety and staff coordination. Earlier experiences include coaching young children in tennis at Maywood Tennis Club, promoting athletic skills and teamwork, and providing customer service as a Sales Associate at TJX Companies. Across all roles, I have demonstrated strong project management, communication, and safety-focused skills, aligning with my passion for public health, injury prevention, and community engagement.
I am currently completing a Bachelor of Science in Public Health at Rutgers University–New Brunswick. My coursework has focused on epidemiology, research methods, medical sociology, health policy, and public health literature. I have developed strong skills in data analysis, program evaluation, and health education, with a special interest in injury prevention and social determinants of health.
Through my academic training, I have built a foundation in both the scientific and social aspects of public health, preparing me for work in health promotion, epidemiology, and community health initiatives.
