Katie Culhane

Hello, my name is Katie Culhane, and I am a senior at the University of Idaho, graduating in May 2025 with a Bachelor of Science in Wildlife Sciences and Management. I am actively seeking a full-time position post-graduation, where I can apply the knowledge and skills I have acquired through my academic studies, internships, and research experiences. I am eager to contribute to a dynamic team and make a meaningful impact in the field of wildlife biology.

WORK EXPERIENCE

University of Idaho Outdoor Program and Rental Center | August 2023 - Present

• Led trips throughout the Pacific Northwest for students and community members to use the outdoors as an education platform. 
• Taught skills in outdoor leadership, Leave No Trace principles, indigenous appreciation, and how to responsibly recreate. 
• Cleaned, organized, and rented outdoor gear along with working as a ski shop technician.

• Traveled throughout Utah, Arizona, and Nevada to complete natural resource technician work for the Bureau of Land Management and privately contracted rangelands. 
• Updated the Natural Resource Conservation Service’s National Resource Inventory by conducting rangeland health surveys, plant censuses, and testing soil conditions. 

• Guided whitewater rafting trips on the Flathead River (II-III) in West Glacier, Montana along with maintaining the health of commercial rafts, running shuttles, and organizing the boathouse. 
• Prepared and served meals for full-day and multi-day trips and worked as a kitchen staff member. 

Research Assistance with Burrowing Owls | August 2024 - December 2024

• Assisted a PhD student in their project regarding the early stages of Burrowing Owl hatchling development. 
• Analyzed trail camera photos to record hatchling emergence, daily resights, feeding events, predation events, and other significant behavior until the hatchlings reached “maturity”. 

• Assisted in the capture, data collection, and banding of Rough Legged and Red-Tailed Hawks.
• Collected blood, tissue, and stool samples and utilized transmitters to track seasonal hawk migration from Northern Idaho to Central Alaska.
