I am graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Biology in May 2025 and hav strong interests in genetics and patient care. I bring hands-on experience from my current role as a Unit Secretary at Holy Family Hospital in Haverhill, MA, where I’ve developed strong communication, organizational, and time-management skills in a clinical setting. Additionally, I’ve had the opportunity to shadow licensed genetic counselors at both Dartmouth Health and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, which has strengthened my understanding of the field and further motivated my commitment to supporting patients through the genetic counseling process.
I have developed strong communication and organizational skills through my previous experience as a Unit Secretary at Holy Family Hospital. In this role, I communicated with patients by ensuring their needs were met, verifying accurate information regarding their primary care providers and insurance, and facilitated safe discharge planning. I collaborated with a diverse group of healthcare professionals by admitting and discharging patients on the unit, maintaining patient charts, organizing transportation, and completing any other request asked of me.
I believe these skills are essential for a Genetic Counseling Assistant, where compassionate and efficient collaboration with patients and healthcare professions is key.
I am graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Stonehill College in May, where I gained a solid foundation in genetics, cellular biology, and lab experience. My coursework and hands-on experience have equipped me with the knowledge needed to assist in the genetic counseling process, including preparing patient histories, creating pedigrees, managing records, and helping to communicate genetic test results. Through shadowing licensed genetic counselors at Dartmouth Health and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, I gain first-hand insight of daily operations, collaboration between medical professionals, and empathetic communication to patients in-person, on zoom, and over phone calls.
I am particularly interested in this role because it allows me to pursue my passion for genetics with the opportunity to support individuals through meaningful life-changing decisions.
