Ministry has been a part of my life even before I knew that God was calling me to minister to the Church. I understood Christ to be my Savior when I was 12, but never knew what it meant to be a follower of Christ till I was 19. As soon as Christ saved me, I longed to worship Him through companionship in others.
I wanted to counsel and pour into the hurting and lift them out of their dark place. Seeing those who were in these places came easily to me because of the experience God blessed me with as a young boy. My household growing up was not a wonderful one, but it matured me further beyond my peers throughout my elementary and high school years.
Both my father and my mother love me, but in their own way. My father was not an affectionate person, and he was hard on me because he was a product of the abuse he received. He mirrored that neglect, psychological, and mental abuse to me, my mother, my sister, and everyone else around him.
This abuse to those outside of the home was subtle and easily manipulated others to make his character shine above the rest. Mom was the opposite; she was nurturing and loving, and she tried to let me make decisions. This parenting style gave me the freedom to learn free of the worry of punishment, but it did not take away the baggage of abuse.
It was easy for people to take advantage of me. I sought to learn right from wrong on my own, in a household with only her, not my father. I made choices to follow the wrong crowd, which led to self-harm and life-threatening circumstances.
This gave me exposure to the darkness many young people face and to their hunger to be wanted and seen. It was only until I found Christ that I really understood how sin worked, how people were created by God to be good, but due to sin, they were stuck in a vicious cycle and acting on the counsel of the devil and their sin nature. Those who follow Jesus have a new heart but must live with an old mind that must be renewed daily.
God has comforted me and changed me during all my heartaches. I long to lead students to Christ during their hard times, so they do not feel as if no one is there to help them (2 Corinthians 1:3-5). I want to disciple parents and the church to better serve the next generation with a desire to see the church grow young.
This is the driving force of my ministry, through the power of the Holy Spirit, to see young people on fire for Christ, bringing all generations closer to Him. I have been in student ministry for 5 years, serving with Ethel Baptist Church, Pocahontas Baptist Church, and First Baptist Nesbit. I hope to continue my education by finishing my BA in Psychology, then an MDiv.
In the next season of ministry, I desire to serve alongside a pastor who will teach me to shepherd the church and support my wife and me as we continue to discern God's ongoing call on our lives.
