My name is Yining Chen, I am 25. I am from Shanghai, China. I also go by Annie, which also my nickname in Mandarin. I have recently completed my Master of Architecture degree from the College of Design at the Georgia Institute of Technology. I am an artist and a designer. Since I was very young, I have been passionate about building and creating. My perception of design has been profoundly influenced by my growing up in the vibrant city of Shanghai. The key moment which makes me want to be a designer or an architect is the 2010 Shanghai World Expo, when I witnessed the work of global architects and designers celebrating their nations' culture, history, and spirit. From that starting point, I wished to join this huge dynamic and talented group.
In my recent role as an architectural intern at Hickey Architects, I worked closely with my professor and gained valuable experience. During my time there, I was involved in several projects that allowed me to contribute to the firm's design process. Here are some of the key responsibilities I undertook:
Conducted digital modeling of an annex using Sketchup: I utilized 2D drawings to create a digital model of the annex. In this process, I considered various factors such as program requirements, circulation, ventilation, and other relevant aspects. This allowed me to create a detailed representation of the proposed design.
Adjusted apertures and interior structure: Based on the analysis of the existing building, I worked on modifying the apertures (openings) and internal structure. By carefully examining the project requirements and considering factors like lighting, spatial functionality, and aesthetics, I made adjustments to enhance the design and ensure its compatibility with the surrounding context.
Created model renderings for client presentations: I took part in producing high-quality model renderings to showcase the proposed designs to clients. Using appropriate lighting, materials, and textures, I aimed to effectively communicate the design intent and assist in conveying the vision to clients.
These experiences have enhanced my proficiency in utilizing Sketchup for digital modeling, analyzing existing structures, and creating compelling visual presentations. I have developed a solid attention to detail and a deep understanding of the critical factors involved in architectural design.
As a graduated architecture master from Georgia Institute of Technology, I have significantly broadened my software proficiency, particularly in tools such as Rhino, Adobe Suite, and AutoCAD. Beyond aesthetics, my studies have expanded to a broader understanding of materials, structures, energy consumption, and other relevant aspects. I am super interested in emerging new tools like virtual reality and AI and what kind of role they play for us designers, and I am super interested in green resolution to design (i GOT my LEED GREEN ASSOCIATE last year, and I am currently upgrading my license to AP). As a designer, it is essential to maintain an open mindset and a continuous thirst for learning. As I start my career journey in this field, I aspire to consistently expand my knowledge and expertise in various aspects of buildings and construction.
