I am a Research Fellow and Lecturer at the University of Surrey with a strong interdisciplinary background in sociology, public health, and applied behavioural analysis. My research has recently focused on trauma, mental health, and wellbeing in healthcare professionals, particularly nurses. I have made significant contributions to several externally funded projects, including the ICON study and a Wellcome Trust-funded investigation into nurse suicidality. I recently completed the University of Oxford Realist Review and Evaluation course. I have produced over 20 publications in high-impact journals such as International Journal of Nursing Studies and PLOS ONE, many as first author, demonstrating leadership in conceptualisation, methodology, and dissemination. I have experience in project management, ethics applications, stakeholder engagement, and supervising MSc and PhD students and members of staff. My secondment to Surrey County Council supported the successful NIHR HDRC bid, securing £250,000 for a developmental year leading to a further £5 million. My work consistently centres on inclusive, trauma-informed approaches and co-production with service users and professionals. I have led co-design workshops, created public engagement films, and contributed to policy reports presented to the House of Commons. My lived experience as a parent of neurodiverse children enhances my understanding of marginalisation and informs my commitment to inclusion and equity in research. I am keen to contribute to the development and evaluation of interventions that address structural and cultural barriers to wellbeing, especially for those from the global majority and / or disabilities.
11/2020 – present. Research Fellow at School of Health Sciences, University of Surrey (0.8 ft) I hold a BA (Hons) in History and Sociology (2:1), an MSc in Social Research Methods (Merit), and a PhD in Sociology, all of which focused on applied research in health, wellbeing, and social care. My MSc provided equal emphasis on qualitative and quantitative methods, and my PhD used participatory techniques to explore social exclusion and gendered experiences among young women. I am currently a Research Fellow (0.8 FTE) and Lecturer (0.2 FTE) at the University of Surrey, where I lead and contribute to research projects focused on trauma, wellbeing, and mental health in healthcare professionals. I have led a critical interpretive synthesis review as part of a Wellcome Trust-funded study on nurse suicidality and contribute to two additional work packages. I have over 20 publications in high-impact journals such as International Journal of Nursing Studies and PLOS ONE, including many first-author papers. These outputs reflect my leadership in conceptualisation, methodology development, data validation, analysis, and dissemination. I have also contributed to externally funded research projects including the ICON study (Impact of COVID on Nurses), and I co-developed a successful NIHR HDRC bid during my secondment to Surrey County Council, which secured £250,000 for a developmental year leading to a further £5 million.
I have experience of working on large mixed-methods externally funded research projects and I contributed to the development of a £1.6 million Wellcome Award. I have trained research staff and students in research protocols, including data collection and ethics, and I supervise MSc and PhD students. I currently co-supervise one PhD student, with plans to supervise two more in the coming year. I am trained in realist evaluation, thematic analysis, and longitudinal qualitative designs.
I have a good working knowledge of research in the field of parenting and family interventions, particularly through my work on trauma and wellbeing in carers and healthcare professionals. I am currently preparing a PPI-led ESRC bid focused on women carers, which builds on my experience of engaging stakeholders in research design and knowledge mobilisation. My research and public engagement work consistently centres on co-production with service users and carers. I led co-design workshops with nurses as part of the ICON study, created three public engagement films, and co-authored the ICON findings report presented to the House of Commons Select Committee on Nurses’ Wellbeing. I have written blogs for the Florence Nightingale Foundation and the Wellcome Trust Nurse Suicide Study, and I regularly contribute to professional publications such as Nursing Standard.
11/2021 – present. Lecturer at School of Health Sciences, University of Surrey (0.2 ft)I lead the research design and methodology MSc module which has an annual cohort of 100 students and involves 12 staff. I also provide supervision support to MSc and PhD students. I am a committee member of the School’s Research Strategy group and Athena Swan.
