I recently finished working as a research associate at Lancaster University where I grew, maintained, and processed various plant species, primarily using histological techniques, to improve understanding of their anatomy and physiology. I am looking to develop my interests and skills in a laboratory setting, building on my experience as an MSci Biomedicine graduate and research associate.
As a research associate, I grew crops and model species for histological investigation with the aim of improving understanding of how photosynthetic types evolve and how they can be genetically engineered to improve crop yield. Techniques used to investigate leaf anatomy and physiology often involved fixation/embedding of leaf sections followed by brightfield/confocal imaging and analysis of leaf anatomy. Further techniques included drying, weighing, and milling of leaf tissue, and measurement of photosynthesis using a LICOR 6800.
Responsibilities also included training new staff, maintaining consumable stocks, and helping others as needed.
